Default What doyou pay for electricity?

I was just curious about what other people pay for the electricty. I am in Upstate NY. Do you all have so many charges added on to your actual usage? I opened my bill this month and saw that it was $250!
What gets me the most irked is the delivery charges. During the summer months my delivery charges for both gas and electric is higher than the bill itself!

Here is my bill breakdown from the company RGE:

THIS SECTION BELOW IS FOR DELIVERY
    Customer charge: 19.38
    Bill issuance charge: 0.62
    Delivery charge: 2016 kwh @ 0.02501 50.42
    Transition charge - Oct 891 kwh @ -0.02176 -19.39
    Transition charge - Oct 1125 kwh @ 0.00749 8.43
    Retail access surcharge 2016 kwh @ 0.00217 4.37
    SBC/RPS charge - Sep 815 kwh @ 0.003026 2.47
    SBC/RPS charge - Oct 1201 kwh @ 0.003286 3.95
    Subtotal Electricity Delivery $70.25:shrug7:

THIS SECTION BELOW IS FOR USAGE
Electricity Supply ChargesFixed supply charge 2016 kwh @ 0.08339 168.11

    Subtotal Electricity Supply $168.11:sad:
So pay about .08c per kwh

THIS SECTION BELOW IS FOR TAXES ON ELECTRICITY
Electricity Taxes and SurchargesTaxes on delivery charges @ 2.0408% 1.43
    County sales tax @ 4.5000% 10.79
Subtotal Electricity Taxes and Surcharges $12.22

    Total Electricity Cost $250.58:hectic1:
    Total Energy Charges $250.58

    Katrina,

Where about in upstate NY do you live? I'm in East Greenbush (12144) and while I usually complain about National Grid (AKA National Greed), our bills are pretty constant. During the winter, keeping our 1500 sqf house at 68, we average 125. During the summer, with one window air conditioner and 3 window fans, we average 100.

My dad, on the other hand, is on some 'alternative program' through a different company. His first few bills were good, and now they're up to 300+ a month! He signed a contract and can't get out now. (What a shock).

Is there a way you can look into other situations? Do you by chance qualify for HEAP? There are programs out there (in my area anyway) that might help. Let me know and I'll dig for some info for you.

    HTH!

We have a city bill...it is electricity, water and trash and our average bill is about $250 a month for everything. It can go up and down (more electricity in the winter to keep the house warm, more water in the summer to water the lawn and garden) but that is the average bill. Its not too bad.

I'm in Alabama and I don't believe we have all those additions. Summer bills run about $250 and winter bills run about $400.

We're in rural New Hampshire in a one-year house. We use gas for our cooking and our clothes dryer and we burn oil for heat, so our electric bill is pretty low.

Our last bill from Sept 9th through October 8th was just $54.29 (293 kw)

    Delivery Services $27.67

    KWH Distribution charge 293.00kwh x $0.032200
    Transmission charge 293.00kwh x $0.013070
    Strnded Cst Recovery charge 293.00kwh x $0.012190
    System Benefits Chrg 293.00kwh x $0.003300

    Supplier Services $26.46
    Energy Chrg Rate R 293.00kwh x 0.090300

    Electricity Consumption Tax $.16

Our bill prior to that was $85.92 but we were also running the air conditioner for about a week straight during that billing cycle.

When we lived in the old house (built in the late 1700's - and not well insulated, drafty windows, etc), if our electric bill was under $150 for a month, we were happy.. it the summer it was generally $230, but we were also running one air conditioner 24/7 for the bedroom on the 2nd floor that got full sun all afternoon!!!

I am in Northern NH and now I average about $100/month in the winter it might go up to $120/month. (Oil heat, gas stove)

Wow! I think you might be in need of an energy audit... we only use an average of 700kwh per month and that is with an electric dryer. I cut back on alot of things the past 6 months like the kids have to unplug their gaming station after they use it, no longer using a bunn coffee maker ($35/month to have coffee instantly as opposed to waiting 5 mins.) ect. I also know that motion lights use ALOT of electricity.

There was an article in our local paper this week about power bills. Co-op customers pay about 40% more than Duke Energy customers. Our electricity is provided by a co-op, so yep, ours is pretty high as well. The price per kw was listed as $79/1000kw for Duke and $110-128/1000kw for the various co-oops across the state.

At least you can modify your lifestyle and how much power you use, but it can be very hard.

I just did a yahoo search and you are about 5 hrs away from me. Close to Albany right? I am about 2 hours below buffalo, on the PA line.

I remember the "alternative programs" and I will never do one again. I actually got out of it, because I threatened to turn them into the BBB. After I did that, there was a news segment. They do offer the "fixed rate" but you know what, so does RGE, and their fixed rate is a lot lower than their "fixed rate"

I do get heap help when I need it. I try to pay for it myself first. If I can't then I ask heap for help, But I usually use the heap for the gas.
