    QUESTION Freezing stuff

Im buying a deep freezer n I was wondering if it was better to keep leftovers in a plastic container(ziplock) or in a glass jar (spegette sauce) I would like to know before I throw all the glass jars away.

    Thanks in advance

Good timing. I have researched plastics, & when I found that they leached chemicals that mimic estrogens in our body, we switched to glass as much as possible. Extra estrogens cause cancer in kids, men & women-who needs it? Ziplocks are more convienient, but get freezer frost & burn.

The best for that would be Vacuum Sealer bags. I just bought a case of Ball Canning Quart Jars to put ALL leftovers in refrigerator & freezer! I tried finding glass containers online, & they were really hard to find & super expensive. If it is too expensive, then you can also just avoid putting any hot food in plastic, then when cooled, freeze. I have frozen food in ziplocks for a year, but weren't edible due to freezer burn. It is really up to you.

I would second wealthybarney's suggestion to get a vacuum sealer. I have one I purchased years ago at Walmart and it's still going strong!

Good question, I am glad it was brought up I actually write a blog about eco friendly ways to live etc and have researched the best ways to contain food and it would be a smart idea to use glass thats not a bad way and of course you can reuse it all the time just keep washing it out when you finish off the leftovers, anything reusable and easy to recycle is a good way to go

Does glass actually freeze and thaw without breaking...like a Ragu jar?

    Thanks!

Well, I don't know about glass commercial spaghetti jars. Mason Jars are a little sturdier & mine haven't burst in freezer as of now.

BUT, I don't put them though extreme hot/cold temperatures. For example, hot food is cooled prior to freezing in the glass Kerr Jars. ALL defrosting is done in my refridgerator with the lid loosend. I leave 2-3" of airspace prior to adding lid to allow for expansion as liquid in jar freezes.

I love my vacumm sealer!! But you can put glass canning jars in the feezer with no problems. I store things like pecans in them all the time and have had no problems. They kerr canning jars have also come out with special jars just for the freezer.
