HD in my area was having a HUGE storewide clearance sale - likely getting ready for the fall merchandise set, and there was everything from fixtures to tools and some at as much as 50%+ off.

I put this answer in another thread about ac units -

We check Lowe's every Saturday morning for it clearance items (sidewalk sales, etc). We know about our list of projects and buy when it is on clearance at 90%+ off. They just did their clearance for bathroom fixtures, lighting, faucets, etc. We got quite a bit of the brushed nickel stuff as that is what the DW likes.

We have a 34 yr old home, and it is full of projects for updating, upgrading or just changing.

My only rule for the DW - if there is a new project - I get a tool for it!

What we have also found is that if it is on clearance at 1 Lowe's, the other Lowe's will honor that for additional volume of that SKU (or family of SKUs).

List your wants on Craigslist.com.... lots of builders overbuy and put stuff on there.

    Good Luck!

as much as i dislike home depot- we got our dinning room chandellr (sp) from there over the winter it was marked down too $22.xx from about $100. Some idiot cut the wires instead of undong the wirenuts so DH just went in the basement got some wire nuts and up it went!

WE are looking to drywall our 2nd floor (it's homosote) and it bad shape (about 55 years old). We plan to drywall right over it (one of these years).

Check for some version of freecycle in your town. A lot of people are willing to trade things - extra tile or paint from projects, etc. We have a non-profit reuse center where we've found all kinds of cool stuff - moulding for a chair rail, a brass 3-light hanging fixture (with cool glass shades) for our kitchen that we painted black and rewired (the entire project, including 3 spare shades, came in under $15). I would think that in a city the size of SLC you'd have some cool salvage and reuse places. When we went to visit family in the Twin Cities last spring, we purposely went to salvage yards just to find things that we may not have access to at home. Good luck - share your deals with us!
