heating question, sort of.

This probably sounds rather silly, but we moved into a house this summer, and it is now getting colder, here's my q: We have one of those vents on top of the house that twirls around and vents the house, lets hot air out in the summer. Am I supposed to cover this in the winter, and with what???? Any help is appreciated

We have the same thing and we don't cover ours. I don't think you need to. My DH and I own a heating and cooling business and I have never heard of anyone doing that.
