Default Help me understand something about the new barcodes

So, it looks like days of DND coupons being doubled could be over? But help me understand why? When a store doubles a coupon, either through regular policy (i.e. HT up to $0.99) or through a promotion such as Super Doubles, isn't it the store that takes the hit on the doubling? It's not the manufacturer paying for the coupon twice. So why does the manufacturer care if the store wants to double the coupon?

I hope most coupons will not say DND. The doubling is by far the primary reason why I shop at HT as opposed to other stores.

Mods, if this thread belongs somewhere else, please move it, it won't hurt my feelings. The topic came up in the SD rumor thread which is why I posted my follow-up here :)

Mainly the manufacturer does not want people to be able to get a bunch of the product for free.
If a couponer finds a great deal with a coupon- the item will be cleared off the shelf and other shoppers and less knowledgeable couponers will not have access to the item. Then the money spent on the advertisement/coupon promotion will have been wasted on a few instead of the masses.

This is something I do not understand either.
If the store's policy is to double all coupons up to 50 cents, for example, the store pays the extra 50 cents and the manufaturer re-imburses the store for the coupon value.

I am not clear why stores that double, fail to take coupons, that say DND. I could understand them deciding not to take the ones that won't scan, such as a 9 UPC code.
I have encountered managers who did not even not the difference between a 5 and a 9.

A couple years ago, some new codes began to surface. They still had numbers, but my Target had to fold the coupon to get the scanner to take it. They had to scan, if I remember right, the right side of the code.

Now, the very new coupons that are coming out now, and soon, won't have any numbers. We won't be able to see a 9 or a 5. So, if you are trading me some pphf for 100 coupons, how do WE know if it will double or not?

Hopefully, and this was discussed in another thread, there will something about the appearance of the code, or the number of bars, etc. so we can tell which ones will double or not. Since, there won't be any numbers on it. I do not want to receive coupons that won't double when the other trader "assumed" they would, and vice versa. I do not want to be sending coupons out.

It is going to be complicated.
They could save everyone alot of trouble, by just putting a 5 on the ones that can double, and a 9 code on the ones that won't double.

I still have not gotten a good answer, unless my memory is bad, as to why a manufacturer puts DND on their coupon. and I have seen Pillsbury coupons with a 9, and the exact same coupon from another source had a 5.
Now why did Pillsbury decide to put a 9 on a certain % of that exact coupon, and then put a 5 code on the other %...?

My only argument with CS at HT, and elsewhere, is the DND is there for stores that have a "do not double" policy, and I hope they try to scan it And it will despite the DND, if I see a 5, I know if will scan, and if the cashier will try to scan, it they will realize the DND, does not mean anything for them.

The store limits of 3 or 4 takes care of much of that.
They-We will be trained to acquire coupons in multiples of 3, in the case of HT.
I have 4 store chains in my town. One won't double at all, and I am sure everyone in this area knows who it is. Another chain has a limit of 3, one has a limit of 4, and another has a limit higher than 4.

I guess you would need to test one of the coupons that only has the newer bar code at the store that you want to use it at to see if it doubles or not. It might say DND but still work and on the other hand it might really not double. This would definitely be an issue if you didn't even have the coupon to test and were thinking about buying 100 coupons. I have one store that manually doubles or even triples one coupon up to $2 total for every $10 transaction and they don't care if the coupon says DND or not so it wouldn't be an issue at that store. However ShopRite and Price Chopper will be an issue when everyone switches their coupons over to only having the new bar codes.

What is worrying me the most is that some of these new barcode DND coupons do not plainly say DND. It is in the fine print (and not even in bold)!

The mfr cares b/c the store cares.

It is my understanding that one MAIN reason that HT lets SmartSource put up the coupon blinkie machines is b/c they are stocked with coupons that DND. HT doesn't mind their shoppers using coupons, but they don't wish to flood the registers with blinkies (found in their own store no less) that deplete $$ from HT's pocket.

Food Lion doesn't double -- so SmartSource stocks those machines with coupons that do double.

The bottom line = money. If stores request coupons that DND, the mfrs are going to listen b/c the mfrs want the grocery stores to be happy and continue stocking their products.

Well, thanks guys. I am not too excited about this development. If many/most coupons won't double that would pretty much also mean the end of super doubles and triples, right? Booooo hiiisssssss!! :(

It is too my understanding that the reason manufactures don't want certain coupons doubled is it has to do more with market research of price points that consumers are willing to pay. Especially on new products which typically do get coupons put out for them in an effort to get consumers to buy it.

I don't understand why smart source puts out the blinkies with 2 different bar codes, if they don't want them doubled then I don't understand why they don't have them all start with a 9...it won't double either way at Food lion, so what does that matter.

Proctor and Gamble knows that they have a huge market full with loyal customers and that is why most of the time we will see only $.25/1 coupons for Bounty and Charmin (why be loyal to something you are going to flush away is BEYOND ME!)...They are some of the most expensive brands out there yet give coupons that are almost not worth the time or effort to cut out....but yet on things like Gillette body/deodorant wash they will do $2 coupons most of the time trying to get people to switch...Only lately have we really seen the $2/1 on Tide, though lots of times it has only been $.50/1 and they are one of the most expensive brands out there...Wisk has $2/1 coupons out often trying to take over the market, which probably prompted P+G to issue more $2 coupons for Tide. These are just examples....

I prefer Charmin and Bounty. I'm one of those loyal customers. I can match that coupon with a target coupon or ECB from CVS and get a great deal for them. The reason is that Charmin and Bounty are excellent quality. I use less toliet paper and paper towels than if I bought the cheep stuff. It is stronger and holds up. I feel like it is actually saving me money!
