I printed the coupon and there is no 5, or 9, or anything.
Will I encounter issues getting these to double?
I printed another IP coupon and it has a 5.
mine have a code under the expiration date with 16 numbers under it.
Then codes lower left witth a 13 digit number above it.
My store has told me if a IP won't scan, no matter how valid, or perfect it is, they won't take it.
With no 5 on this coupon, it may not scan = not valid.
If it will scan then it would take CS to double and triple it.
I only have 4 coupons for this week for I won't be going Wednesday 7am like last week. I'll go later in the week and report back with my results on this coupon.
Also, I now see the coupon says 1 per visit.
When did that start showing up on coupons?
It another change that we have to get used to.
less coupons that are .50/1 and .75/1 and more $1/2 and $1/3.
less items on the shelves, higher prices, smaller packages.
But, we'll get used to it.
It has the new GS1 barcode that we'll have to get used to... it will be our new normal.
What happens in your store depends on whether their scanners are updated or not. If they aren't, and the coupon won't scan, then it's just a YMMV.
The retailers have 6 months (the new code was introduced on July 1) to update their systems. Until then, we'll have a lot of trouble here and there I'm sure.
There is a bright side to the new format- reduced coupon fraud since they contain much more information and options and are unreadable to humans. I hope it leads to more relaxed policies as the computer reads the very detailed information and limits you to exactly the manufacturer's intent.
But yes, I'm sure there will be sadness as well over some things.
As for "one per visit" that's something that has shown up on occasional coupons for a long time. I don't see a trend on that one yet.
I used mine yesterday. Both scanned and doubled, no manager override needed. YMMV.![]()

So, a GS1 bar code
How do we trade for those coupons when we do not know if it is a "5" or a "9" since can not see it?
Or is the 5 or 9, within the new code, and we just have to learn whether it is a 5 or 9 by looking at the entire GS1 code?
Thanks.
The naked eye cannot read them, so unless someone posts their experience with a coupon online, you'll only be able to tell when you redeem it.
I assume that GS1 databar coupons that say dnd, wont. For example the recent butterball coupons said dnd and was coded not too double. However manufacturers seem to be inconsistent about this. Over the last few weeks I redeemed GS1 databar coupons for Hillshire Farm Lunch Meat, Jimmy Dean Sandwiches, BallPark Buns and Franks. All of them stated dnd but unlike the butterball coupon, it was not in the code and too my suprise they doubled!
My biggest concern is coupons thats coded not to double but doesnt state dnd. No personal experience with this issue but Ive read that its happened to others.
An interesting observation ... In July/Aug, these new coupons would only scan at my HT with the hand scanner. Since the beginning of September they scan with swiped over the regular scanner! Im not sure about IP's, I havent used any databar IP's so far in September. However they wouldnt scan even with the handscanner. I got the I'll override it this once from two difference managers. I fully expect to run into a snafu about that soon, probably during triples.
Unfortunately this will become an issue.
I trade for coupons that I need to be a 5, and the person who will send me the coupons, does not know if they will double or not.
The trade is made, I get in line with the items, and the coupons won't double. Bad trade and no one knew what numbers to look for on the new codes to detect 5 or 9.![]()
The first HT I went to had registers that couldn't even READ these. I had a polite discussion with the manager who refused them, even though you could tell it was legit and I was pretty irritated.
Then went to another store where the SM said their registers had not been updated yet but they would be happy to manually enter/triple it for me.
