Oh what have I done...and how shall I fix it??

I had that BOGO coupon for Planter's Peanut Butter expiring yesterday. I also had the BOGO ZVR coupon.
So I went last night, and I don't know what came over me, but I took 2 Smart Balance PBs to the checkout.
When the ZVR didn't come off, I told the manager on duty that I had a ZVR for it, and she just took off the 2.99. So I got them both free, which was what I expected.
So I get home and check my ZVRs and realize I had the wrong brand!
I guess I can just take it back and exchange it for the right product?
But knowing how quick they are to throw out food when it's returned, I hesitate to do that.
I don't even care for the Smart Balance. I wanted the Planters.
What would you all do?

Well, it's a shame they throw them out though, especially since it was just purchased, still sealed etc but I guess it's policy for them

I would take them back and exchange them, especially if you won't use the SB variety (although I do like it myself since I tried it!).

Then again, trying to explain how it should be an even exchange might be interesting, given the ZVR and coupon for BOGO I hope you have a great CSR that understands it all - I'm grateful at times when I screw up to know them so well and they know me and just go with the flow

side note. I really wish they made the zvr lists easier to print so things like this wouldn't happen. that way we know exactly what we have a coupon for since they feel these are "convenient"

Either way, just swap it out, if you just give them your vic card and have them look it up that way then they don't know the other 2 things....
My store doesn't toss stuff that is unopened...walmart and Target do, but I never see my HT tossing stuff....

I got that but she bought the wrong items. How did homemailer coupon come off when that was for the planters and she bought smart balance?

I'm going to assume that since the price had to be written on the free coupon, they manually entered it?

I went through self-checkout. The only thing I can think of is that the coupon beeped, they looked over and saw I had peanut butter and didn't look to see that it was the right kind, and just entered the price.
Like $Saving said, since they had to enter a price, they probably figured that was the reason for the beep.

I'm headed out of town till next Tuesday - I never had a chance to return it today. But I will when I get back.

Ummmm, I don't think they'll throw it away - I just had that thought, after recently seeing the threads on food waste at Target and Walmart.

I told this story here before - I remember walking out of HT with a bag of frozen veggies realizing I got very pricey ones - over $4! instead of the ones that were BOGO.
I turned around before even leaving the store, to exchange it. The cs guy took it and taped a "discard" sticker on it - I said, "wait! I didn't even leave the store!" He said no matter, they can't return it to the freezer.
(He then tried to reassure me that they sometimes get a truck - I can't remember the name of it, that collects useable food from grocery stores and restaurants. If it came, they would donate it that way. I felt a teensy bit better.)
Of course, that was a perishable, so totally different story. But it's made me think twice of returning food ever since.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up...it was more of a "Are you SURE you got both for free?"
I know we have a local food bank that goes to LF and they get the produce they are going to toss...I see ice outside when the truck comes, just a pile of ice on the ground....I guess they dump it as they are putting it in the truck? Who knows...

I KNOWINGLY let my planters store coupon expire (we won't use it)....I am REALLY getting picky lately maybe because I don't feel money is as tight anymore and if we won't eat it I am not buying it.
