I thought the harris teeter people put the tags on the bottles not the wine distributors so I guess they can affix them to anything they want. I did see the pies up there this morning but I didn't see any tags on them.
I just got back from two local HTs (Raleigh NC), and noticed something odd in both stores. They have a BOGO sale for fresh fruit pies, and they have taped various wine hangtags to the pie boxes! Now, these are not coupons for pies, or even baked goods.... they are for seafood, meats, $$ off order, etc. Did anyone else notice this? There are no hangtags on the wine bottles in the wine section.... 'cuz they're all taped to the pies!!
On the one hand, if a manufacturer has afixed a peelie or coupon to their own product, or even in a reciprocal fashion with another product (ie: buy this wing sauce, get $$ off chicken wings, etc), that is perfectly legit. On the other hand, it looked to me like HT took it upon themselves to tape wine hangtags to their own brand of pies, just to get you to buy a pie.... or to prevent folks from taking stacks of them off the wine bottles. If the coupon was for $$ off a pie, I could almost understand... but what is the deal with putting a wine distributor's coupon for shrimp on a store brand PIE box?!
Has anyone else seen this? Is it even legal for them to do that? Just wondering.....![]()

I actually has winetag for baking goods tape on it so it was bogo 6.99 so 3.50 -1 double so 1.50 for it and beside it was wine tag for total purchase so more then free......
My store had them marked down already and the manager gave me the winetags to use. When I was leaving they had a whole display out front with the winetags taped to the boxes.
I had sanity once upon a time I promise. It was just so long agoooo that I can't remember it
.
Wow, that IS strange
I so rarely ever find wine tags on any bottles in any stores I quit looking for them![]()

Yes! I found this, too, at the Falls Point store in Raleigh, NC. Buzillions of wine tags taped on pies! They were for $1 off any grocery purchase ($5 minimum), not for pie at all! There was even a sign saying "Pies BOGO, Plus Save $1 With Coupon"!
I tried using one, and the cashier said "Did you buy a pie? These are taped on the pies and are for pies." Then he re-taped it to a pie sitting with others at his register! Too funny!
Let's start calling these pie-tags, since they don't appear on wine anymore!!!

If Harris Teeter is taping wine tags to pie boxes and requiring you to purchase a pie in order to use the coupon which does not indicate a specific product then that is in violation of the terms of use of the manufacturer's coupon. In other words, the coupon taping to a pie box is not a problem but changing the manufacturer's terms on the coupon is illegal.
True and I would have taken that up with the store mgr, and if he/she still argued the point that they could, I'd be tempted to write down the name of the manufacturer of that coupon and contact them and tell them how they were being handled.
It's wrong, period. Unless they had an agreement with the manufacturer and somehow I don't see them agreeing to that!

My store had the big coupons on the pies and then a wine display in front of the pies with the $1 off your total purchase on the wine bottles....
The wine distrubitors put them on and I think they will give extra to the employees to replenish...I know that is how it is done in the seafood deptartment.
I would have definitely have fought the off total purchase incident.

Weird! I actually bought two of the BOGO pies in the Burlington, NC store and they didn't have any winetags (pietags?) on them.
I wasn't going to buy the pies but I have this odd habit of looking down at the floor as I'm walking through HT - there are almost always coupons lying about on the floor where people have either thrown them away or dropped them as they go along. I saw one poor little coupon, all dusty and dirty from lying on the floor and picked it up. Lo and behold, it was a $1/1 on a bakery pie WYB Cool Whip. So, BOGO pies + Cool Whip + $2 off = one happy husband.
