CHAT Let's talk about the one card/household policy

What are your thoughts on the Harris Teeter policy of restricting each household to only one card or linking the cards together so that each household can only have 20 coupons per day doubled regardless of how many cards they have?

Here's what I think. I feel it is discriminatory against large families. Presumably, their policy is based on would be good for an "average" family which is probably 3 or 4 people. For them 20 doubled coupons is a good amount. But for our family of 12, who normally eat 10 loaves of bread a week and 2 pounds of pasta per meal and at least one party-sized lasagne per dinner, 20 coupons is definitely not enough. It seems much more fair to me for them to allow a certain number of coupons doubled per card instead of per household. What do you all think?

I think it is their rules and they can do what they want...Not trying to be mean, but they don't have to double coupons at all. I would love it it if they doubled endless amounts of coupons, but they feel they have to draw the line somewhere.

They could be like Ingles and only double coupons based on how much you pay something like double 3 coupon up to $.50 (big whoop!) for every $20 you spend....

First of all, I have to say that I can not imagine trying to feed a family of 12. My hat goes off to you!

However, like uummm said, it is the rule and getting coupons doubled is a privilege. The rules used to be looser, and people abused them. For example, if it were per card, there would be individuals who would get 10 cards and clean out the store and sell the product at the flea market.

I know you are an honest couponer, momto8kiddos, but unfortunatley, not everyone is, and they ruin it for the rest of us.

I agree with ummm. its their rules they can do whatever they want. Maybe you can get someone to help you like borrow a neighbor or friends card who is shopping that day.

I, too, agree with what uummm said. Any store for that matter has the right to set up their own policies. As a customer, I have the right to choose among all stores, whose policy suits my needs/wants. They don't have to cater to all my wishes since I know they're in the business to make profit. IF, it so happens that their policies meet my needs, then they get my business; if not, they continue their business while I find other stores to shop at.

I think companies that would meet needs of those who do bulk shopping (not necessarily large families) are warehouse clubs like Sam's and Costco's. IDK if they take coupons but that is an option for those who wants to buy in bulk. However, we can't expect these stores to double or triple mfr coupons; thus, we can't have it all

We should keep in mind that we, as shoppers, can make a difference in store policies with our wallets. IF, more and more shoppers quit shopping at a particular store, they get the message quick enough to make revisions to their policies. BUT, if majority shoppers are content with their policies and continue to patronize their store, nothing that the minority shoppers can do about it.

Yeah, I know they can make whatever rules they want. I was just asking what you guys thought about the rule and if you think it is a fair one. (Maybe they're reading this thread...)

Well, personally, I feel that a lot of things work against big families like yours. We're very much a "mommy, daddy, and two kids" kind of country.

I can see why Harris Teeter would want to limit VIC cards, but I would be happier if they limited it to maybe 2 per family and each card can double 20... I don't know. This is why I like Giant, I can double all the q's I want, plus, sometimes their merchandise is cheaper than HT. But then, Giant doesn't have triples and limits doublers to a few times a year and then you can only double 4... There are advantages and drawbacks to every store. We just do what we can.

I agree with you - I think 20 coupons doubled per day is low but HT has the right to do whatever they want regarding coupons. I have the right to spend my $$$ somewhere else which I have been doing more of lately.

My cousin that has 9 children (all single births under the age of 12) shops at BJs. She likes the coupon policy there and the fact she can combine store coupons with manufacturer's coupons. She has the policy down pat and she loves it there...If I had that many kids (or 8) I might do that too, although I feel as though I shop for a huge family but we are only a family of 5.....I have a huge stockpile but I also can hit HT everyday with little effort since it is so close to my house. If I lived further away AND If I had to take my kids shopping with me (my youngest is 11yo) it might be different .

BiLo will double as many as you want-i have used over 60 in one transaction, plus they double 10 like coupons....My particular stores are not close and well, and kinda dumpy-nothing like THE TEETER. LOVE THE TEETER!!!! Oh and BiLo seems to CARELESS About customer service-unlike MY TEETER (I say my, because some of you seem to not have pleasant Teeters).
