Asparagus, a spaghetti squash (at my husband's request), chicken sausage, jazz apples, goldfish crackers and wonder bread for my little one, and some Garden gourmet spices.

Joggled my little brain, checked the freezer and realize I'm down to one container of homemade chunky applesauce! Looks like I'll be adding that to my purchases too since it was also in my e-vic email, thanks for the 'joggle'!

Have you done anything interesting other than the tomatoes?
I went to get some roma tomatoes from our local farmers market (that is about 15-20 vendors) and they had NONE! I have 50 roma plants and got a bowl full the other day but I can't do anything small.
So far I have canned-
Beef Stew (for dh to take to work)
Beef Soup (again for dh)
Boston Baked Beans
Small White Potatoes (those are so handy!)
Chicken soup
Spagetti Sauce
Peaches (that was the first thing I canned, and they are not sweet at all!)
Apple Pie Filling
Mushrooms
I just made Chicken Stock to put up today

I am going to buy those Jazz apples and do something with them. I can get 15lbs between my card, my moms and my aunts (though I won't,typically only get mine).

We got a half a cow on Tuesday so I am finding stuff to put up that have beef. Beef and Wine will be tomorrow.

I was so bummed, ON CL I saw someone listing FREE mason jars!!!! They must have had 200-300 in the picture. I was the third caller and too late.

Does anyone know - how do the Jazz apples compare to other types? Are they closer to a Granny Smith or to a Red Delicious? Are they crunchy? Sweet? Tart? Sounds like maybe they're more of a cooking apple?

I looked last night and they are supposed to be a cross between braeburn and gala. They are marketed for eating but good for cooking too. They are firm and hold thier shap very well. They are sweet but juicy it says. I am going to give them a try...
Here is one of the many websites I got some info from.

Thanks! I will definitely get some. DS is sooooo picky about his apples - he could eat a Granny Smith every day but absolutely won't touch any that are too "soft" - probably gets it from em - lol - I can't stand Golden Delicous-type mushy apples - bleh!

He does like Gala so he'll probably eat them and, if not, I'll use them to make some applesauce for DH. It's a win/win!

Default Re: What are you buying this week ending 7/20

Today I went and got (in 2 different transactions)
4.9lb of Jazz apples (that was all they had!)
3 bags of Rewrap produce consisting of McIntosh, Jonagold, red delicious, pink lady
1 bag carrots
1 celery
2 chicken strips
2 organic chicken tenders (marked down)
4 lemons
1 bag of onions
3 Cocoa Pebbles (3 kids =1 box each)
1 Rold Gold Cheddar pretzels (can you tell I had a kid with me?)

I paid....
$19.85, $9.xx and $7.xx
I will get $15 back in rebates though.
MY son couldnt beleive it he says I need to go to a coupon rehab class cause I seem to be spending a lot.

Anyways, I don't like mcintosh or red delicious, well heck, I really only like Honey Crisp for eating apples, but I had read someone said to do a mixture of apples when making applesauce...So I got those plus I had some in my frige from last week at LF when I needed 2 apples for a dish and it was cheaper to buy a rewrap thing at LF but it also had 2 pears. I peeled and cut them all (well I left some skins on not all) threw them in a pot and some applejuice...And this lady was right! It does make some good applesauce. If anyone is interested, this is the site (specifically the applesauce recipe I scaled down) I have been using this site for A LOT of my canning recipes lately. It is a good site with all sorts of things like Pick Your own farms, organic places...and a lot of good recipes and knowledge with lots of pictures.
