    QUESTION HARRIS TEETER: coupon question????

I was just at HT and the cashier, in a very RUDE manner refused to take a $2/2 coupon for the B1G1 cereal....is this correct?? I have never had a problem using a coupon like this on a B1G1. When I mentioned that, she said, "Well, not all of our cashiers are trained on fraudelent use of coupons." WHAT?!? I've already contacted corprate thru email, I hope to hear something soon. Any help??....

My HT will not allow that because their policy says you are only 'purchasing' 1 so therefore you would have to get 4 (purchasing 2) in order to use that coupon. However - if a cashier tried to accuse me of 'fradulent use of coupons' for that - I would get a manager and demand an apology immediately... just my opinion...

Ugh- I hate it on the rare occasions where I'm treated as a "criminal" for coupon usage. That is not a fraudulent use of a q by any means. Corporate usually responds quickly to inquiries. Keep us posted!

The policy is one coupon per bogo deal - which IMO means the $2/2 would be fine b/c it is ONE coupon. But don't be at all surprised if corporate backs up her interpretation. It is basically up to the stores to enforce the policy as they see fit. I would, however, be upset about the "fraudulent use" comment and would make sure they knew it!

Thanks ya'll! My steam is cooling off now, but it REALLY upset me. BAD. I really don't think I'll even go back to that HT, not for a while anyways. I will keep ya'll posted on what corprate tells me. I DID, however, call the manager of the store, while still sitting in their parking lot, and ask about the coupon usage, his reply was that he didn't really know the coupon policy but he could go get a front end clerk, who did he come back with....yep, the same blame cashier. I politely hung up. Uggh. Oh well.

That's not even right, since you're not "purchasing one and getting one free", you're purchasing 2 at half price each, making it as though you had bought one at full price and gotten one free.

In my ad, BOGOs always say "item rings at half price". I was under the impression that it was this way throughout the chain, although I guess if they come out with regional ads for other stuff, the half-price/BOGO thing might be regional too.

But if your ad does say "item rings at half price" then you are in the right. You are purchasing two items, they are both reduced price. The coupon is for an amount off when two items are purchased. The cashier is 1) wrong and 2) rude.

Now that I think about it, CVS rings their BOGOs as one full price, one free item. And I've never had problems using $/2 coupons there. The mfr (and therefore the coupon coding) only cares that you had 2 scanned, in my experience. They don't give a flip what kind of discount the store applied to the items.

Hope you get this sorted out (and an apology).

Unfortunately, that is how my HT interprets the policy as well, and corporate has backed them up. I have tried arguing the "each one is half price, I am paying for two" argument with them, but I have not been able to change their minds.

Sorry you had such a bad experience. There really is no excuse for accusing you of fraudulent coupon use. Their policies are not clear on this. That is in no way your fault.

I know the coupon you are speaking of. I have had it happen both ways too but more recently was able to use the coupon.

The 'fraudulent use' of coupons accusation is very unfair, but the cashier was upholding HT policy on BOGO items.

HT policy clearly states that only one coupon is allowed for BOGO items. That is why so many people here post on buying single items in a BOGO sale to avoid not being able to use a coupon on the second item.

The same limitation applies with your coupon. If a coupon requires you to buy 2 items, you can't count the second 'free' item in a BOGO as one of the two purchased requirements. Therefore, you have to buy at least 3 items to qualify to use such a coupon. I actually had this happen to me once as well.

I think it is a silly and confusing policy, since everything would be easier if they just treated BOGO sales as 'half off" sales like all other grocery stores I know. Furthermore, I think it is pretty clear that 50% off method is how their cash registers work, and therefore they don't automatically reject the extra coupon. Which means it is left up to the cashier to police by manually checking. And any time you ask cashiers to manually police something, YMMV.

But regardless, it is their policy and their right to do what they want, even if it is confusing and we don't like it.

I'd be livid if a cashier accused me of theft! And I don't consider this up to interpretation, if corporate wanted to limit it, they are perfectly capable of setting the computers to disallow it or a cheaper and easier option of rewording the policy. By clearly stating in the ads that a BOGO is really a 50% off sale they have made it clear that it is strictly an advertising ploy and not a purchasing policy. In addition, TONS of $/2,3,4,5 don't say "BUY X amount and get $ off", they say "Save $ off of X products" with no requirement of the ambiguous "buy"
