SAD New rule for the day!

So I go to my Ht today to do the pills deal and a few other things. I go to get the emerald nuts that are BOGO and checkout. The cashier wont let me use my 1.50 off 2 emerald products and her reasoning was that it was BOGO. I tried to explain that i couldnt use 2 on seperate bogo items but i could use the 1.50 off 2. She wanted to agree the point and then said i am tired of people coming in here getting stuff for free and you cant use that coupon. So i am nice almost too nice, I realize she is a coupon hater and i am not going to change her mind I have her delete the item and on my way out i tell the store manager that i will no longer be shopping at that ht due to the way i was treated. I explained what happened and he agreed i could use the coupon that i wasnt trying to get over on them. He goes up front and rings me up.

I guess some people who are to silly to save using coupons become coupon haters for those of us who know how to save.

I feel your pain!

One thing I do when an employee mentions that they can't let or don't like it when customers get stuff for free is remind them that the store is getting paid (through the manufacturers). Who they get their money from shouldn't be any concern of theirs. If I walk out without paying anything it should matter as long as the store gets paid. sometimes it helps. Sometimes not.

Just wow. Would it have been acceptable for a cashier to say something like that to a customer using WIC or food stamps?

I'm not saying couponing is welfare, but in all cases, the items are being paid for not by the customer himself but by a third party. With coupons, it's the manufacturer, and they have a specific budget set aside just for this purpose. With food stamps and WIC vouchers, it's taxpayers.

As a taxpaying individual (which I'd assume an HT cashier would be), it should bother her more that someone's getting their groceries paid for, in part, by her, than when someone's getting their groceries paid for by General Mills, Oscar Mayer, and P&G.

There needs to be a Coupons 101 training video shown to anyone who will be operating a cash register. I had to do a computer simulation of dragging items across a scanner at my first job. A coupon information guide would have been much more useful.

Thumbs Up Re: New rule for the day!

Just ignore her/him and go to the CS Desk and do the "deals" there. Tell the "white shirt" managers (Customer Service Managers) or one of the Store Managers about the cashier's attitude, etc. Let them reprimand them or explain the correct policy. If I have an issue with the cashier, maybe they are new and don't understand the policies, etc., I just go the CS Desk.

Was she of non American decent with an accent and about age 40?
Sounds like a Walgreen Asst. that refused my $1/1 coupon on a sale item $0.99. She said I could not get an item for free. I wonder if the manufacturer of that coupon would have agreed with her since THEY are the ones who will be re-imbursing the store for the value of the coupon and want their product in my hand. Your store was to be re-imbursed for that $1.50 by the manufacturer.

I've been forced to just lets issues slide that I knew would mess up my transaction, because the clerk was in error, and me using EBT was going to complicate a refund. But, I just pay and go straight to CS.

Coupons 101 seminar? 100% correct and a professional coupon USER might need to conduct this seminar.

I had a HT manager tell me on the phone that they took expired coupons. What a shock that was to me. YMMV does not V that much.

Some of them will make stuff up to cover their ....... when they know they have told you wrong. I had a manager at HT tell me that my upc 5 coupon would not scan and double because it said DND on the front of the coupon. I asked her to try to scan it. Guess WHAT? It scanned but a dumb ole coupon user could not have possibly known anything about upc codes.
Well, excuse me I did not know the register-scanner could read WORDS. The coupon doubled because of the 5.

Then there are clerks-employees, it just kills them to see someone walk out with a free item. I loved the opposite, when Lowes Foods used to triple. The clerks would cheer the total as it headed to ZERO.

Ok, I'm calm now...........

I love it when cashiers act like the money you save using coupons comes directly from their paycheck.

Default Re: New rule for the day!

It's actually not a new rule, it's just that different stores/cashiers implement the 'bogo' rule differently. Technically their policy does say that you cannot use a coupon on the free item, and technically if you're buying 2 items that are bogo and using a $/2 coupon then you technically are using part of the coupon value on the free item. Some stores see this as breaking the rule, others don't see a problem since it's 1 coupon even though the $$ comes off of both items. Just depends on the store/cashier/manager as to what they think about it.

HOWEVER, there is no excuse for her attitude about the situation. HT is all about customer service, and there is no reason that a cashier should ever speak to a customer the way that you experienced. If there is a conflict and the customer does not agree with the cashier, the cashier should call over a manager or CS person to resolve the situation, not stand there and reprimand the customer for 'getting stuff for free' which is just ridiculous. Sorry you had to deal with that treatment. I'm glad the manager at your store handled the situation for you.
