Yes, they do tend to have higher regular prices, however, if you shop their sales and use coupons on top of it, you can get things WAY cheaper than you can at Walmart.

I totally agree! HT is way cheaper if you cherry pick the sale items and know how to use coupons. And the customer service at HT usually rocks. There is no way I could pay $30 or less (sometimes 10 bucks) for 4 paper bags filled with groceries at foulmart.

That's probably one reason their stores (and their employees) are a lot nicer. I've never had an HT employee ask me "Whatchoo want?" And I've never seen nasty-looking meat and fruit (with fruit flies! ew) at HT. It may be filled with well-off people who scoff at coupons (and huff and puff at couponers slowing them down), but if they're willing to pay those ridiculous prices so I can have a nice store with a great selection to double my coupons at, well, I suppose I can put up with them.

I can go into HT with a stack of coupons and minimal effort come out with a cartful of groceries for under $20. If I go into Walmart with a stack of coupons, all I get is attitude, suspicious looks, and a headache. Since Walmart is actually farther away for me, it's just not worth the drive most of the time.

OP, I'm sorry about your HT closing. I'm lucky to live in a good-sized city - there are half a dozen of them within 15 minutes. I'd be pretty sad if my shopping options were limited to Walmart and Food Lion - my 2 least favorite stores.
