News HT Loses Market Share in Charlotte, NC Market

Walmart has taken the lead in Charlotte NC where HT is based. Interesting article.

See, that's why they need to bring back monthly triple coupons (or at least alternate between triples and superdoubles). And overage. LOL

Maybe it's just because I don't have a Super Walmart, but I can't think of any consumable item I would buy at Walmart that I couldn't get cheaper at HT, Kroger or a drugstore sale. And better. I hate going to Walmart.

People just need to get on the ball with coupons. Although I hope they don't...I don't need the competition

Bleh. I dispise WalMart but I'm very lucky I live in Charlotte and have the chioce to shop other stores. They are building a Super Wal-Mart 2 miles from my house just over the border in Indian Land SC. I plan to never shop there and I'm excited to see the promotions the HT, LF and Bi-Lo by me roll out to keep my business. I will continue to support the above mentioned stores because they are carolina-based, have better customer service, better products and better business practices.

Interesting article but I'm very happy that I only have to set foot in Wal Mart once every other month or so now instead of multiple times a week like i did before couponing. If you don't coupon or casually coupon wal-mart does have great prices. Poor supermarkets- big bad walmart strikes again.

There was a great post on SS a while back comparing shopping at a grocery store with coupons vs. Walmart or a supercenter, and the grocery store came in the best deal every time. People often just assume they are getting a better deal at Walmart; I have a friend who belongs to Sams club, and she showed me a list of some of their prices - the price on staples like sugar and bread were more than you would pay at HT without a coupon!

Jen,

We live very close to each other, I am about 6 miles from the new WalMart going in. Currently the nearest Super Walmart is about 15 miles or more. I only go if I am over that way for something else AND need something there.

I heard there may be a Sam's going in there as well???? Do you know anything about that?

Dawn

I had a SW open 2 miles from my house, 2/10 mile from my HT, I didn't get diddly from anyone to get my business. We have since had an ALdi's open and they-Aldi did send out $/$$ coupons when they first opened that I used at HT.
I do know my HT has suffered. They have cut back hours for the employees in my store. There is usually only one register open and Uscan until about noon. It did use to be much busier before SW came along. One thing I did notice is my HT has lowered prices of certian thing because of walmart, and they were NOT lower over in Huntersville where there is no walmart. I asked why the price difference and was told they were trying to price match walmart.
Now in Huntersville Target has gone and expanded the store to increase the groceries and frozen, but it is still not a super (not enough real estate) but they are most certainly busy. In this same shopping center is a HT that used to be a Winn Dixie and the store is huge. I usually only go during special coupon events but they are usually pretty busy.

I have noticed during this SD my ht is not busy at all.

I have never bought any groceries at Walmart that were cheaper than any of my grocery stores. I only shop there for food if I'm desperate for time and am already there for something else (which is rare anyway, since I hate shopping in dirty, messy stores with terrible staff in all locations).

I'm done with my local HT because of lack of stock on SD and Triples and horrid customer service. The worst of it is them being out of stock on sales items 2 hours into their start day. I spent an hour looking for 16 items and all but 2 were out of stock. When asked about rainchecks, I was told that the stuff wouldn't be in for the rest of the sale and that I wouldn't get benefit of the SD qs. Oh well, I save more with Kroger and they are rarely out of stock on their sale items. The two stores are within a mile of each other. Maybe HT needs to take a look at some of their competitors in this area. HT is always slow with never more than 1 cashier open. On the other hand, Kroger is always busy and has most, if not all, lines open. Walmart never has had a deal I would waste time on going there for. IMO they don't have the better price, and I don't need the headache. I am happy that not all HTs are like mine.
