Harris Teeter ~ Other: Coupon Abuse at HT

Today for my 3rd and final HT trip I was in line behind another couponer with a fist full of coupons. Several of the coupons (10 or so) didn't scan.

Well, ok I can certainly relate to that, so the cashier called for the head cashier who began going through the coupons. While I wasn't aware of all of the particulars of all of the coupons-- I was aware of one set that wouldn't go through: the werthers .75 off 1 for the chocolate caramel kind. I had checked for these and my HT doesn't carry them. I glanced in her bag and saw she had the original kind. So I stood there quietly while they were going through her coupons, but when she started insisting for the werthers coupons to be tripled I asked her if she had found the chocolate caramel kind -- she said no. I stayed silent for the rest of her battle.

After her order was over I told the cashier that she had the wrong kind. He said he knew this, but felt intimidated to not honor them (he is a teenager). I then went over to the head cashier -- showed her the coupon and explained why it didn't scan (she was the one who put them through). I love a great deal, but coupon abuse hurts us all.

maybe she was not sure what the coupon ment? it does happen i have been doing this for awhile and sometimes it happens to me.

If it was written in fine print I agree -- that's happened to me too, but on this particular coupon its in rather large print that its for the chocolate caramel kind only.

She probably was not aware.

And trust me, there are worse 'coupon abusers' out there than her!

Its possible, but her cart with filled with all the deals that have been posted here (smart popcorn, mitchum, shout etc) and on other sites. And the werther's coupon has been discussed. She clearly did not look like a coupon virigin .

I have the same Q and it CLEARLY states the specific kind. While I enjoy a great deal as much as the next person, I want to get it within the rules of the store/manufacturer. I couldn't agree more that it's people who clearly try to break the rules that make it all the harder for those of us trying to play nice to the best of our advantage.

Plus, if HT doesn't stock that type of candy, they won't be able to be reimbursed. Bad for everyone! I hope it was just a mistake.

I would love to think that it was an honest mistake but sadly I have seen and heard too much during these three days to make me think that it was. DH has a friend who works at one of the HT stores here in town and he said they have had people yelling at the cashiers every day. Then if the managers step in and try to enforce the limits they yell at and verbally abuse the managers. I have seen more mis-behavior this triples for some reason than ever before (did you see the taser story? yikes!). At another store I heard a cashier and manager discussing someone who had been in earlier and cleared the shelves of windex, forcing them to take all of her coupons even though there is a limit of 3.

That's yet another reason I am so glad to be on THIS board, we all try so hard to make sure we obey the rules and save money fairly.

Sorry, don't mean to get preachy, but it is an absolute fact that the cashiers and managers are taking note of these things. I am really afraid for the future of triples at HT if these things continue. :frown:

And I want to say thanks to everyone who posted about their triples deals and totals for making sure we all stayed within HTs corporate guidelines and didn't post about any "fake" deals!!

I agree, I saw/heard about a lot of bad behavior from other couponers this triples. I've never had the managers or store employees look so weary when I handed them my coupons. They usually look happy and cheer me on for saving, but not this time. I didn't have any beeping or issues but I heard more stories from my store managers about people trying to abuse the limits and use the wrong coupons. They are taking note and I'm afraid they won't do triples again because of all the bad couponers. It just makes me sick. Some of it may be honest mistakes, but most of it is not. There are so many awesome legitimate deals, why do people try to cheat?
