    Default Question about Christmas cards

I am sending Christmas cards. I am sending my friend a card, she is in a bad marriage, and recently said she hates her husband. And he has asked her to move out (this is her marriage #3 and they've only been married about 4 years).

So, when I mail her a card this year, should I just address it to her, or should I include his name on the envelope also? I am mainly just friends with her, not him. Would it be offensive if I just put her name on the envelope?

Unless one of them has moved out, I would put both names on the card, just to be on the safe side. You never know what's going on in someone's home, and if they reconcile, it may look bad if you don't include him.

You could also do Jane Smith & family, which is probably what I would do in those circumstances.

I don't understand the taboo about sending a card to just the friend. I could see where it would be more awkward if you were friends with both the husband and the wife, but if you're really only friends with her, I don't think it's inappropriate at all to send a card addressed to her specifically. Well, unless it was worded to deliberately exclude him like, "Merry Christmas Everyone But HisName," or, "To HerName Only." A card just addressed to a friend doesn't seem inappropriate to me at all, but then I have learned on these threads that I am apparently woefully lacking in etiquette. If my husband got a card from a friend addressed to him only, I wouldn't be offended, and I like him just fine.
