Default Halloween candy in Dayton OH had a needle in it..

I just saw on the news that a child in Dayton OH was eating some of her Hollween candy. When she took of bit of the mini candy bar it had a needle in it. They said she was not hurt from the needle. The mom said that she did not check the candy first but that will be the last time that ever happens.

At this time they have no ideal as to how the needle got in the candy.

That needle scare was so rampant when I was a kid that hospitals offered to X Ray our candy for us. Which I think is probably the only way to see if there is actually a needle inside. Would be interesting to see if this story is really true or not. Turns out when I was a kid, the only needles ever actually found in candy were traced back to the people who turned them in to the police. *They* put the needles in there themselves.

My daughter didn't go out this year. She is on a low carb diet and shouldn't eat candy anyway. She also has food allergies. I did go out after Halloween and buy some marked down candy for her to have throughout the year. We gave out all fruit Fruit Rollups.

When she did go out I wanted her to only go to a few houses and only to houses where she knew the people. Of course this never happened because mostly she went with my husband and he would take her all over the block. She went one year with some friends a couple of miles from here and I presume the mom took them to houses where they knew the people.

Most of the candy she did get was tossed out because she was allergic to it. I have diabetes and husband is often on a diet. I also have food allergies. So while I do eat some candy (I had low blood sugar tonight and ate Twizzlers), most of what she got was not something I would or could eat. So it really made no sense for her to go out. But she still wanted to.

I just put my foot down this year and said I would buy her something of her choice but she would not be going out. My husband wasn't home to go with her and I wasn't able to take her to her friend's house even though she was invited. This friend lives a couple of miles from here.

I live in the Dayton area. I read this thread this morning, and asked my husband if he had heard anything about it. Neither of us had. I checked the websites for our 3 news channels, and also the website for the newspaper, and couldn't find anything about it.

Thats crazy. It rained here this year. We took the kids to the mall. We did check their candy. All 12 peices they got. It was sooooo packed at the mall i was afraid of losing a small child in their so we left an hour into it. We just ended up going to walmart and buying a couple bags of candy. Then today my neighbor gave us a ton of candy! She only got one trick or treater! But that was from it being cold and rainy all night! We are good friends with mrs miller though so I trust her and dont need to check any of that candy.

I remember the needle scares from when I was a child too. My mom stopped taking me trick or treating and instead took me "trick or treating" at malls and churches. I seem to remember a lot of parents doing the same.

It would be sad if trick or treating truly got dangerous enough that it essentially stopped. I hope it never comes to that cause I love handing out candy. We get a ton of trick or treaters here. I ran out of candy last year after an hour and this year it only lasted an hour and a half...and that was after buying twice as much as last year. 250 pieces in total and only giving one to each kid. That's a lot of trick or treaters in less than 2 hours.
