How about a paper tree and then a small tree that you could put on a table?
Honestly, my kids never bothered our tree, we always had a full size tree (artificial due to allergies). I just put plastic type ornaments on the bottom, nicer ones out of reach. The kids were taught not to bother it, and after a few "test of the boundaries" they learned.
