| Re: Is Trick or Treating ruined for you? Hm. I think it's perfectly fine for teenagers to dress up in costumes, but they usually go to parties instead of actually trick-or-treating. This year I'll be going to another party. I can't imagine NOT dressing up. When I got to be too "old" to trick or treat I would go out to eat with my family, and we'd all dress up (even my mom), and then I became the one giving out the treats at the door. There's something really goofy and fun about dressing up, and it happens once a year, so why not?
And P.S. I always make my own costumes. It's my favorite part! Homemade or DIY costumes are the best. One year I went as "Miss Congeniality" when I found a fabulously sequined, gaudy dress at the thrift store, complete with a cheap tiara and a homemade sash, some heels, and lots of makeup and a fake bouquet. Another year I was a raspberry (I used lots of red balloons, leggings, and made a hat that looked like a leaf and a stem). Last year I was Betty Crocker- I used my mother's vintage red apron, wore a cute skirt and a blouse, carried around a wooden cooking spoon and a pot holder, and had red lips. This year I'm going as a gift (LOL). I plan to wear a huge bow on my head, and cut the bottom out of a big gift bag so I can wear it around my torso and stuff it with decorative tissue paper, and have a big gift tag that says "From Me To You" or something. Then I'll just wear a skirt and top, and cute shoes, and curl my hair. Cute and easy? You bet. I can't wait!

| Re: Is Trick or Treating ruined for you? Well I would rather see a teen ToT than doing what most of the teens do round here. Halloween is the biggest party nite of the year. It's like once they don't have a bag of candy they have a 12pack of Bud instead lol.
I think as long as someone is in costume or making an effort at a costume I don't care how old they are they get candy! If it really bugs someone, have two bowls. One with the "good" candy, one with like toothpaste samples or something lol.
We don't get ToT here; we live in the business district. We also don't take our baby ToT. Last year she was 4 m/o so absolutely nothing but breastmilk, this year she is 16 m/o. If someone hands her something she wants to eat it RIGHT NOW and I doubt most people have separate bowls of the safer candy for kids under 3. I probably won't take her until she is old enough to ask and heck I dunno where we would take her to ToT. We are doing Halloween-like activities like baking/decorating cookies while she "helps" and of course she gets to eat that stuff. I even started decorating back in Sept, I <3 Halloween! It's the one holiday where my freaky self looks normal for once.

| Re: Is Trick or Treating ruined for you? I have to agree with the OP about moms and infants. NO other children just a tiny infant. WHAT!? I could see if it were your own neighborhood and you just wanted your neighbors to see your cutie but not the case in our neighborhood. I think that is awful exposing those babies to the night air and germs and who knows what else just so YOU can get yourself some free candy. Ugh that irritates me.

| Re: Is Trick or Treating ruined for you? I stopped passing out candy after a kid in a skeleton suit traumatized my dog, but the thing that irked me the most was rude & picky kids. "YOU are coming to ME, asking for free candy. You don't get to snub your nose at what I have to give you child!" And I'm a fat couponer, so you KNOW I had the good stuff! :shrug7:

| Re: Is Trick or Treating ruined for you? We get those too meggers or theyll say well can I have more or can I have that instead. That bugs me too.
I like giving out candy but people need to teach their kids some boundaries and respect. They are so rude anymore!

Everyone should keep this in mind...
Not all kids can afford costumes.

They did not have money to costume three kids. One year, my mother took two pieces of yellow board, cut them out in the shape of pac man, and used string. She drew in the features with a marker and bought a $1 yellow plastic eye mask.
I see a lot of free costumes offered on craigslist and freecycle. There is also the 75-90% off post Halloween sales too. |

| Re: Is Trick or Treating ruined for you? Ok. I'm guilty of asking for something (more like decline) specific...
My DD is VERY allergic to peanuts. I am massively paranoid about it, and halloween is the hardest night of the year for it. She can't even have anything thats been in the same bowl as the peanut candy. :(
If I see someone is going to hand her a reese's or snickers, I politely decline and explain. I also keep extra candy in my pocket and slip it into her bag so she thinks she got something. Contamination is more likely than eating a peanut.
My boys are REALLY good also about politely declining peanut candy.
I also have to give kudos to my neighbors... They pass out peanut free candy...

.. | This is why I do not understand why people are so gun ho on handing out candy. I've handed out bendy pencils and pennies. I feel so bad. |
