my trip to giant eagle

I went to Giant Eagle last night and was alittle ticked when i left. I bought 4 tubes of toothpaste and 4 toothbrushes, and a few other little things. I handed the cashier my coupons. She scanned them but once she got to the coupons for the toothpaste, she said "I cant accept these." I asked her why? and she said because they are taking off more than what you paid for the toothpaste. It had rang up 1.34 each and when she scanned the coupons it took off 1.50 for each. So she tried again, and again. And still when it doubled it took off 1.50. So after standing there for 5 minutes and she kept saying she could not accept them. She starts to hand them back to me, and i said whoa, wait a minute, isnt there a way you can manually enter in the correct price? Cuz hey free tooothpaste is fine too. So she clears out the whole order and redoes everything, and again she says I can not accept these coupons! So i said call a manager over here....and finally she pushes a few buttons, and changes the price of the coupon to 1.34. So i didnt get overage, but i did get them for free which was ok with me. In all my couponing experience I have never had anyone at Giant Eagle say they couldnt accept them because it was over the price. Has anyone else had this happen?

No, I haven't had that happen. I would just chalk that up to an inexperienced/untrained cashier. If the coupons scan and take off 1.50, I don't think they should go back in and adjust the price down. Some of the registers at my local store will fully double the coupons, others double to the cost of the item. They are being reimbursed either way tho.

At the store I go to most often, there are certain cashiers I will go to and others I won't. I will gladly stand in a long line for my "favorite". She is always pleasant, and and she knows that I try my best to follow the rules so she will work with me if a coupon doesn't scan for whatever reason. Other cashiers would just say, "Oh well, doesn't work..." (the Muir Glen coupons for example...) So my advice would be take note of names (good, bad, and okay), and just choose carefully who you go to.

I just went to another Giant Eagle and did the same transaction....and this time i had no problem at all. I think the lady last night had no idea what to do, and wasnt very motivated either. I think she didnt want to deal with it.

When you have trouble at the checkout with a cashier, politely ask for a head cashier.

It is a waste of time trying to explain to the cashier how the coupons should work, etc.

So how should of the coupon worked? should it have been doubled the full amount (1.50) or should it have only been doubled to purchase price (1.34)?

It should only double up to the price of the product... but sometimes they do double to the full price. IMO, if it fully doubles, that's an added bonus. If I'm buying "free items", I always have something extra in my transaction, just in case it doubles to the full value. If I notice during checkout, I don't point out if a coupon fully doubles when it shouldn't have.

I experience this all the time at my GE but they hate all couponers so I'm used to it.

Probably goes back to that show which shall not be named and the people who, because of it, think they are entitled to a cart full of groceries for 69 cents. Also, I suspect some cashiers can be a little jealous if they see a good couponer pull of a great deal.

I could tell you why they fully double, but then I would have to kill ya. LOL
