Drought, heat, high demand send corn prices soaring

    Friday, September 9, 2011

”Corn is a mighty hot commodity these days.

Prices soared in August after weather damage across the Corn Belt led the U.S. Department of Agriculture to predict lower yields than previously expected.

Some agronomists and farmers predict yields will be even lower because the heat and drought continued. …”

It's not only corn that's going up. The yield of the wheat crop is up for some debate right now according to a local grain grower/seller I have contact with who sources grain from across the U.S. and Canada.

I have noticed increasing prices everywhere, not just Giant Eagle. Walmart and Sam's Club have also steadily been raising prices over the last several months. As long as commodities and fuel prices remain high, we can be assured grocery prices will continue to increase.

Oh, one thing that has gone DOWN in price …

    Fairtime Salt Water Taff
    8 ounce bag

”This taffy will take you back to being a kid at the carnival.

But you don't have to go back in time to re-discover this multi-flavored taffy.

Seasonal packaging makes it perfect for anytime of year, this candy tastes just like regular candy, without all the sugar.

It was sweet, juicy and chewy, just like regular salt water taffy.”

Yeah I just finished my 2nd bag of it. Not bad for $.50, but not my favorite.

I hope meat (beef chicken pork) doesn't go up more, since they all feed grain. It's been bad lately.

It was just on the news today that when Obama became president gas was around $1.79 gallon and now it's around twice as much, $3.60 or more a gallon. I imagine the increase in fueling the food delivery trucks is also a contributing factor in food price increases in the stores.

What I really can't believe is their regular prices for cereals! Almost $5 a box for many kinds. I would never shot at Giant Eagle if it wasn't for a sale item or good double coupon.

looked for *free* carolina rice, was $1.39 on sale reg price $2 each. new pizza stuffers (totinos) was $4.49 reg price. acme sale this week, $3each. i am thinking about trick or treating this year as i WAS going to buy myself a 3 musketeers at the checkout until it was $1.09!!!! for that price i want a fun size bag, am i right?? glad i have a stockpile to work from already and can afford to wait for a good price. i cringed when the lady ahead of me last week spent $2xx.xx and when the cashier said, "any coupons?" she acting as if the cashier called her momma a bad name and said"NO!" i saw so much she could have saved on. wish i was rich like that.

Value Time Graham Crackers were $1.29… then $1.49…. now $1.69…
GE buns were $1.09, now $1.19

There is also a big difference in sale pricing - items that used to be 4/$10 on sale are now 4/$11 etc. And it is only going to get worse, especially in the next 4-6mos.

    I don’t even want to discuss cereal….

Even if you do not use coupons, you are paying for them in the form of the computed selling prices of the products and the services.

Manufacturers and retailers love coupons because the consumer foots the bill for the creating, the compiling, the printing, the advertising, the redeeming, and the fulfillment of those coupons.
