While we are on the subject, where is everyone getting their Red Plum inserts? The mailman used to give me a few extras but stopped since they are now printing names on the outside of the junk mail that includes the Red Plum. I was going to order some from a clipping service but they want $4.95 to ship them. I live in Westmoreland County, Pa. Does anyone get a different paper delivered to them that includes the Red Plum? Thanks!

I drive to an area that does get them, find various places (I have a routine now) and dig through the garbage in front of the mail boxes. An apartment complex works great for this.
We don't get redplum in the paper or mail either.

I live nearby in Somerset County and from a quick search online, the only paper that carries Red Plum around here is the Tribune Review. (Johnstown, I believe) but there's is very small. Bought a paper once and it literally had one coupon in it and the rest were ads. If I remember right I searched in like a 100 mile radius. You can go to RP site and they can tell you who carries, but it may be a very small insert. I order mine online because we don't get any of PG or any other special inserts here either. HTH

The new generation of barcodes is called:

    GS1 DataBar, a 1 minute 40 second video

    +

The new generation of barcodes takes into account things like:

    • verifying the expiration of the coupon
    • verifying the exact kind of product the coupon is good for
    • not having any human readable information
    • being smaller in size (on packaging)

    +

It’s the software behind the scanner …

Some store chains can scan the new coupons.

Some store chains cannot scan the new coupons.

I think it is all about the software that the store subscribes to / pays for and not the hardware (of the scanner).

There is good, better, and best barcode software subscriptions.

Good and better are not able to read the new barcodes.

Best can read the new barcodes.

A chain like Marc’s subscribes to good software (their scanners cannot differentiate coupons, they more or less just know the discount value … it is up to the cashier to verify the product and the amount).

I live in Pittsburgh and we don't get the RP or the once-a-month PG Brandsaver at all in the Sunday paper or in the mail. The Washington Observer-Reporter carries the PG Brandsaver but most likely you'll have to use a clipping service or ebay.

I live in West Mifflin, not far from Pittsburgh, and I get them in the mail. Does anyone know why they don't come in the Sunday Paper? I feel a bit cheated by this. Last week when I went to Barnes and Noble, none of their papers had inserts. I wasn't happy.

With coupons, they are many different ways that the coupons can be distributed.

    • One was is as a Sunday FSI (Free Standing Insert).

    • Another way is in snail mail.

Most likely Red Plum took a close look at how their coupon inserts are being distributed and they decided to go by the snail mail method.

Maybe they determined that their inserts are not reaching enough 'unique' customers.

Anyone can purchase Sunday newspapers at stores to get their inserts.

You have to have a mailing address to receive the coupon in the snail mail.

    +

    Another thing to consider ...

I like to purchase the Akron Beacon Journal.

I do not live in their delivery area so I have to purchase it at a store.

Many times there are no inserts in the store sold newspaper but there are inserts in the home delivery newspaper.

I asked someone at the Akron Beacon Journal about this and it was explained to me that the home delivery customers get the inserts first (for sure, almost guaranteed) while any leftover inserts go out with the newspapers sold at stores.

Many times those store sold newspapers are sans coupons.
