Overage- Permitted or no? Read to find out! There is some confusion on whether overage is permitted at Giant Eagle so I thought I’d make a fresh thread her to help everyone out.
GE’s corporate policy specifically states that a coupon cannot be redeemed for more than the price of an item, the customer will only receive the item’s cost for the coupon discount, not the full coupon amount.
ie: Widget A = $3.00
-Coupon for $4.00 =$1 overage??? No - not permitted =$0 after coupon adjusted to $3.00 item cost??? Yes - This is what they are to do. So please do not discuss getting overage from a coupon - it is forbidden per their policy and therefore also a violation of HCW’s terms and conditions.
Now there are instances where a customer can and will get a resulting overage as a combination of store promos and coupons: Instant discounts
Widget B is on sale for $1.00
There is an advertised promo: Save $3 instantly wyb 5
There is a $.50/1 coupon for Widget B
5 x $1.00 = $5.00
- (5) $.50/1 Q’s doubled = $-5.00
- $3.00 instant savings
= $3.00 overage
The instant savings is taken off as a line item discount meaning on a separate line in one lump sum. BOGO discounts
Widget C is on sale for $1.00
There is an advertised promo: B10G5 Free
There is a $.75/2 Q
15 x $1.00 = $15.00
- (7) $.75/2 Q’s doubled = $-10.50
-$5.00 For 5 free wyb 10
=$.50 overage
The free item(s) discount is taken off as a line item lump sum discount, just as like an instant discount.
***EDITED TO REMOVE eOFFER SCENARIO***
The coupon policy, as of 10/6/11 prohibits stacking eOffers and MFQ’s.
So basically the answer to the ‘is overage given at GE’ question is no and yes - you will not get direct overage from a coupon but you can get indirect overage from a combination of coupons and store promotions.
Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any questions - we’ll try to sort them out!
