Signature based debit card purchases, now, no signature required if total is $50.00 or less

This is new to me.

I used my DollarBank debit card as a ‘credit’ (a signature instead of entering a PIN).

Well today, Wednesday, May 12, 2010, I was surprised that my purchase did not require a signature, instead it was automatically approved (signature screen did not appear / approved screen automatically appeared).

At first I thought I had pressed the wrong key.

I decided to ask the SCO cashier and she was the one that told me that debit card purchases $50.00 or less do not need a signature (I did not ask about a PIN based purchase).

This was the Brook Park, OH Giant Eagle on Snow Road.

Speaking of DollarBank …

For every signature based debit card purchase with my DollarBank debit card, I earn 10¢ cash.

Up to $75.00 per half year, for a maximum of $150.00 per year.

For two years now, I have been able to reach that maximum of $150.00 per year.

Sweeet!

One thing I do do is that I do not keep too much money in this type of checking account and I do not do any other type of transactions (like writing checks or automatic deductions).

I need to be able to easily close this account if something bad happens, like my debit card is lost or if my account is compromised.

Later on Wednesday, 05/12/2010, I shopped at the Parmatown, OH Giant Eagle and at the SCO checkout it did not automatically okay my purchase.

So, I think this change is gradually being phased in, store by store.

I used my Discover card at the New Kensington store yesterday and had the same thing. The cashier said it was for any amount so I don't know if she was right or not. Usually it is for under a certain amount.
