A lot of the GC do have a waiting period for activation - not all, but some of them.
Maybe the 3am time in the ad is for the other stores (like Sears) however, GE does open to sell GC's for the sales. They did do it last year.
I think it's great that they'll open at 3 am. The normal time for them to open after closing for a holiday is usually 6 am. The 3 am time allows people to run in to get gc's to use at the black friday sales.
Now, if they were smart, they would put on an extra cashier too. My store has one cashier at night (lots of stock people, etc. but only one cashier).
I'm thinking of bringing her some excedrin that night - she'll probably need it LOL

.. #5 is due Nov. 2012!!
If I recall from last year, the way they did it was open early and have a number of employees on hand to complete the activation process on all gift cards immediately. I *think* only the gift cards purchased at the GE's only are guaranteed to be activated for immediate shopping- I don't think the GC's sold at GetGo's are immediately activated like this.
Just an update:
Contacted GE and confirmed they are opening just the cafe section of their corporate stores at 3am Black Friday to sell retailer GC's. They also said they will have coffee and breakfast items available. The rest of the store will open at 6am. GC's are supposed to be activated immediately.
