jen was this the waterfront? I have had only 1 guy there ever look closely at he coupons. Most just scan away
This was a first for me today -
I was at my favorite GE and bought 2 Swiss Iced teas and 10 JD BBQ's with the hang tags that were freshly put out (was just there last night and no hang tags). The Q's were DND '5's, but I have NEVER had an issue with them not doubling so I didn't think twice about it. Well the very nice young man who was ringing me out informed me that he had to stop them from doubling because of the DND. Now as a somewhat 'seasoned' Q'er I debated arguing it because I know sometimes it can be a crap shoot, but I figured hey, their policy just says it will double Q's up to $.99 and doesn't address the DND's and seeing as the computer allowed it, but he reversed it...I'd give it a go. Well, he very politely said it was how he was trained and he can't go against it. I said no problem - I understood and I would asked CS to see if they had a varying opinion. Went to CS and received the normal 'MFR says no, we can't, yada, yada. They were cordial, but defensive off the bat. I try to remain as polite and friendly as possible during discussions like these as I try not to damage any relationships for future situations like these, so I was a bit startled by the instant attitude (it really wasn't that bad, but still noticable) Well CS and a few Mgr's met and discussed it and I mentioned that if they prefered not to allow the dbling I would just like to make a quick return and have the Q's back. I also mentioned that there is a great inconsistancy as I have never had a problem before with any other cashier. I also mentioned that the SCO's allow the doubling so it creates even more confusion. Eventually a front end mgr pointed out on his own that the corp. policy does not address DND's and that they should refund me the portion that did not double. He said he was going to discuss with the store manager and the corp. offices to see what the final ruling should be for future reference and I asked if he minded that I caught up with him later to find out for myself. Of course he didn't mind. So we will see what he says.
Now thinking back on this though, I am a bit concerned that corp. may address it and not allow for it. I guess it is possible they may reprogram the computers? or change their Q's policy? Either way, although I am glad I was refunded the money, I am concerned for the implications it may have on future purchases with DND 5's... especially at the SCO's. So I guess the moral of this long drawn out story may be that the $9 I was refunded may be more costly in the future and some arguements are truly not worth it. Sorry in advance if I ruined it for the rest of you.

also I just dont get it. The store pays the double part not the manufacter so it should be up to the store right?
this is why I always go to sco with the DND 5's - my store always hits the button to stop them from doubling when I go thru the regular checkouts - even my favorite cashiers do it.
Yes, and your guy is probably my guy from today.
That is how I understood the doubling - the store pays its half because it is their promo, not the mfg's so it should be up to them whether to double. The one CS lady kept saying the cashiers would be fired if they allowed the DND's to dble, but of course she also said she had no clue that there was a button to press to 'undouble' a coupon......
I would be surprised if they could reprogram their computers to identify the DND coupons. That is probably one of the reasons they only allow two like coupons. They make a ton of money off of all those shoppers that fill their buggies and don't use coupons. Two DND's at a time is probably not worth the aggravation of trying to revamp their system. I'm sure they are already aware that they double all coupons at the SCO.
It has always been my understanding that if it says DND they are not suppose to let it double. I have found that many times the cashiers just start scanning, waiting for beeps and don't pay any attention. I have found that some of them do choose to look at them and stop them. I never do more than a few DND's with a cashier that way if they stop them I'm not out much.
I wouldn't worry about it at all if I were you.
A heck of a lot goes on behind the scenes at a retail establishment.

There are relationships established between manufacturers, retailers, and customers.
There are manufacturers that have a point of view that their product should not participate in the doubling of their coupons that they issue.
• One reason is that it actually ‘cheapens’ the perceived value of the product.
• Also sometimes monetary price breaks are offered by the manufacturer to the retailer (like ordering 100 cases instead of 50 and the manufacturer will give the retailer a rebate).
• Another reason is that some manufacturers prefer to offer bonus size products or other forms of savings (like temporarily price reductions) that do not involve the doubling of their coupons.

Jen, I for one am not upset with what you did. I too have done or asked about something and then battled with myself if it was worth it and did it help or hurt in the long run.
In fact, I battle within about the DND "5" coupons and should I use those at the SCO or point it out to the cashier or if the store should double those and the "9"s because the policy states that it doubles "all" coupons up to and including $.99.
This is what I was told by a GE Cashier and heard from other people:
If the couple states DND the store only get reimbursed face value and if it doesn't state this they do indeed get reimbursed double the face value. I have no idea how that works out with the clearinghouse though. Maybe there is a list of stores they go by for how much is reimbursed. That would be a lot of extra sorting and I would think take special machines to read the words DND instead of just reading the barcode.
Did I make it more confusing? lol
So for now, I seek out the cashiers that do not stop the double if I have a lot of coupons and items or I use the SCO if I have few items and quick transactions so I only use two like coupons in each transaction without needing assistance and once in awhile I just let it go. I'm only consistent in being inconsistent. ;)
Same thing happens to me which is why I normally avoid cashiers like the plague. This morning, I picked up a pack of Trident gum from a closed lane and was going to make a bee-line for the SCO when I was intercepted by a cashier. I think the front end manager saw that I was getting ready to check out and purposely sent someone to open the register. (I've had issues with the mgr before AND she gave me a glare when I was leaving.) Fortunately, the cashier had the ultimate "I don't care" attitude and allowed my only DND-5 to double.
I held my breath too with all the Wet Ones Q's I used in the past couple of weeks.
I have one old guy cashier at my GE who is a coupon hawk. He inspects every one and stops all the DNDs from doubling. The rest of them just scan away. I've always wondered what GE's official policy is on this. It sounds like their policy is as confusing and arbitrary as other chains'!
