Default Giant Eagle and Doubling up to .99, is it worth it?

I have two GE stores close *enough* to shop at if I desire to. One is about 20 minutes away and the other is about 40, but isn't that far from the commissary, so the trip wouldn't be wasted to go that direction occasionally as well.

My question is this. I have a Krogers. They only double up to .50 regularly, and then we hope and pray for a few days of super doubles once every few months.

Would it be worth it money-wise to drive to a GE and get the doubles up to .99 instead of just shopping at my local Krogers which doesn't double up that high?

Would YOU do it? Should I try it? Am I being silly? Any comments on this appreciated!

I tend to do pretty well with the GE doubles. I'm able to get many things free, pay just tax, or at most maybe .25-.50 for certain items. Today, I purchased Mitchum deoderant, was on sale 2/$2.84, since I had .75 coupons , I just paid the tax.I try to do as many deals like that as I can. Maybe give GE a try for a couple of weeks & see how it goes??? Happy Shopping!!!

With the combination of catalina deals, double q's and sales - for the last couple of weeks and this week, it would be definitely worth it. Any way you can get someone else in your area to go with you when you go to GE (to share in the gas expense)?

In particular, the Planter's deal (if you can print enough of the $3 q's) and the Kraft cheese deal if you have enough of the free cheese q's (buy the $4.39 deluxe and roll the cat so your oop is just cents).

Plus the soft n dri/right guard deodorant deal - free after q's this week.

I guess it would really depend on the q's you have and the deals happening (plus what you're interested in)

Absolutely worth it...especially if they have a gas station at either of the GE's. For every 50.00 (before coupons) you get .20 off gas per gallon...at least at my GE I do. I "cherry pick" the deals and make sure I have multiples of the 1.00 or .75 coupons. I use my .50 coupons at Kroger.

Okay, are there any stores that double up to a dollar in Pittsburgh or the surrounding area?

That's the ones that are by my commissary and I'm thinking I could combine trips to do the majority of my shopping at both places.

Giant Eagle, Shop 'n Save, Foodland, Kuhn's and Festival all double up to .99, but none have super doubles. Have to go to Ohio for those!

LOL, that's not a problem, since I'm currently in Ohio! I was just wondering cause I've come across some traders that their store regularly doubles up to $1.00, which would totally rock so I was wondering if maybe in Pittsburgh there might be something like that. 99 cents is still great, but OH the deals to be had with doubling $1 coupons, huh?

Okay, for the record I hit GE and the commissary today and I totally, totally think it's worth it! I spent (way more than y'all would've I'm sure) around $200 between both stores, but came home with over $600 in groceries. This was my big stock up, I was out of a LOT. And I totally took advantage of the Cheerios sale, and Powerade and so much more. We're stocked for a long time on a lot of stuff. Actually most of my oop was on produce, but I don't mind paying for produce now, the garden should be coming in soon which will bring my grocery bill back down again.

I wanted to thank all of you for your input. DH and I have decided that GE is getting the majority of our business from now on. I went through self-check (with two baskets FULL of stuff) doing 3 transactions and more than 100 coupons and despite some basic computer issues, it was one of the smoothest transactions w/ coupons I've ever had. They were so helpful and I saved soooo much. After my big shopping day, I'm exhausted, but it was so worth it to see the savings at the end of those receipts!

Our GE's double AFTER coupons, I make about nothing in fuel perks from groceries since my OOP is so low, the only way I get cheap gas is the $1 off gal of gas script coupons. As to the OP..oh yewah baby..SOOO worth a 20 min drive. Around here 20 minutes is a nothing drive.
