Default Who pays when the store doubles?

I had always heard that the manufacturer only pays the face value, and the actual store absorbs the extra amount when doubling. But the last week that the Fuze was $1 and the .50 were still not expired, the lady helping the young cashier would not allow her to double them. She said the coupon stated (and it did) that is was "up top .50", therefore they can't double them. I told her I thought GE pays the extra when doubling, and she claimed that is NOT true. She been at the store as long as I have shopped there (15+ years), so I would think she would know, but I still think she might be wrong?

On the same lines, but a different thought. At one of my closer GE (Jamestown Plaza), one of the girls told me they changed the policy to only accept up to 2 coupons for like items. This was because of customers over using the coupons. So it got me thinking about us who coupon heavily. If we frequent the same store, will it jeopardize the unlimited amount of coupons we can double. Like today, I used 20 of the Mitchum coupons in one order. Now I'm thinking maybeIi should break them up more throughout the week, or spread them out over 2 or 3 stores? Or am I just overthinking this lol.

When I have alot of coupons to use (with something I want to stock up on) I break it up over a few trips/stores so I can fly under the radar. I think the most of the same coupon I have used at one time was 10 (that was the loreal kids shampoo), most of the time I limit myself to 5 of the same. I pass two Giant Eagles to and from work a day so I try to alternate if there is a good deal. That's just my preference.

I think I'll start trying to break the coupons up a little more also. They already know when I come in, that I will be using a ton, so I'm sure they will probably be relieved lol.

That cashier is wrong about the Fuze coupon.

Fuze will pay the retailer 50’ plus a handling fee of 8’.

The other 50’ (the doubling of the coupon) is the responsibility of the retailer.

+

Retailers fight, tooth and nail to maintain and to try to increase their market share.

One way is to accept coupons.

Another way is to double coupons (sort of upping the ante).

+

Always ask yourself what is the level of local competition …

If there is little or no local competition, then double coupons do not need to be offered.

If there is a lot of local competition (say a new store just opened up), then double coupons are likely to be offered.

+

Q) Who pays for the doubling of coupons?

A) The retailer does, in the form of ‘the cost of doing business.’

Just like they pay for the printing of their store flyers and the ad they place in newspapers.

+

Ah …

Eventually, it is the ultimate consumer that pays for the double coupon promonition, in the form of the computed selling price of the products on the shelf.

It is easy not to notice but items on the shelf do go up in price, in very small increments of something like 7’ but that small change adds up.

+

Shoppers that do not use coupons are supplementing customers that do because they are paying an inflated price, a price that helps pay for the double coupon promotion.

Let us all thank them!

+

Coupons have been around for more than 100 years.

They continue to exist because the issuer and the store benefit from the promotion.

Coupons:

• Increase product awareness
• Move merchandise

Here's the part I don't understand:

WHY do some manuf have DO NOT DOUBLE on their coupons? Why would they care if the store is going to chip in some money to entice you to use that coupon?

That thar question is answered in this way …

Some manufacturers allocate promotional monies in the form that are not coupon offers.

One example is B1G1F promotions.

Another example are bonus items (like get 50% more).

+

Bottom line …

They want control on how their product is promoted.

+

Just one reason ...

Sure, double coupons is a relationship between the retailer and the customer but I guess the offer hinders a manufacturer’s method to their madness (how they promote their product).

+

Getting a product heavily discounted or for free, in the eyes of the manufacturer, cheapens their product.

So, those manufacturers do not want their products participating in double coupons promotions.

My GE has always doubled the "do not double" coupons...atleast so far...without any question.
