| | | Re: How did you get your DH on board? I just kept talking and showing the evidence. When I walked out of WAG with DS (19) had 8 bags and spent 4.00 he was amazed he even got hooked, and he even came home to tell DH, and he is sure to tell anyone who will listen hehe. I would explain to him that: "why should I pay xxx when I can get it free or practically free". My DH is so proud of me he tells all the guys on the riverboat he works on all about "our" stockpile. I show him the rebate checks. I even borrowed money for easysaver one time and showed him all the stuff I got free and then paid his money back. Goodluck I think that somewhere he has developed a bad stigmatism(sp) toward people who coupon.

I know he wouldn't go out of his way to spend as much as yours did, but I do try to show him my reciepts and how much I'm actually spending oop once the rebates and coupons are in. I also stockpile a lot of items HE likes and we both use to show him that I'm not going out of my way JUST to spend money. He still doesn't get it though...I think he thinks I'm actually spending more than I'm letting on when I bring home 10 bags full of stuff and tell him I only paid a few dollars, LOL. I feel your pain! |

"We're doing okay. We don't need to use coupons." | For some reason the above statement stood out to me from the other statements because to me it sounds like he has the misconception that only poor people coupon and save money. If you have not read the book "The millionaire next door" go and buy it or borrow it from the library. You will see that most millionares clip coupons or buy thier groceries in bulk from warehouse stores (I have the book for trade too!)
Also if you check out the results from this HCW poll (which is just an un offical poll) you can see that 45 out of the 142 people that voted make an income of $100,000 or more!
The misconception is that most coupon clippers are poor is just wrong. Yes there are poor people that clip them too, but I think the majority are SMART people trying to save money. One of the way the poor get rich is by learning how to HOLD onto the money they have and SAVE it.
Perhaps your DH thinks that only people that are poor clip coupons and you need to OPEN his eyes. Budgeting and goals are great ways to get the point accross that you have being wise with your money and by clipping those coupons. Maybe he feels like you think he is not providing enough that you need to use coupons.
I think it is time for a wake up call.
My DH loves it and get it, has from the begining. We are not rich but are making progress into the realm of actually saving money and building our "wealth" He works 50+ hours a day and I SAH with 5 kids. Couponing affords us to live a better quality life on a smaller household income. It affords me to feed my family and lets me stay at home with the kids. It is also a GREAT high, and lots of fun.

| | Re: How did you get your DH on board? My DH is not happy with my couponing. And I'm a majorly against buying stuff that I don't use. I do not coupon very much, I just do it to save money on stuff I buy. I do not coupon food very much because I cook from scratch a lot. I also make it a point to eat out of the pantry and freezer regularly, so our $400/month groceries last 2-3 months then I spend $200 on the next few months eating fresh veggies.
He hates it, but since I've started couponing, he has noticed that I have bought non-perishables. I also have used it for stuff like sour cream, soup, and some deals on meats. Another bonus is I've been finding deals like $4/20 or something. That I'll use. So I don't save a ton, like $5 at most a week, but it's something and he's stopped complaining so much.
It's a free coffee or lunch out for him, so he's getting better. |

But when he sees how much we save he's more supportive. He gets irritated with my stockpiles sometimes, except toliet paper for some reason, go figure. And he will use coupons by himself although only a few at a time. but he's pretty go about it. :) |

I wonder if part of it may be a 'provider' thing with your DH (even in you make equal $). Maybe, your stockpiling is giving him this weird idea that you are thinking he's not making enough for you to live on, and you have to take drastic measures (stockpiling).
| I think this is definately part of it. Also this: Quote: |

| He grew up very poor and is sensitive about it. Quote: |

| I totally believe that and now have to get him to see that.
We had a talk on the way up to his parents for Easter dinner today. We are not yet on the same page...getting closer though. I tried to explain the whole CVS thing to him. I don't think he was really believing me that I was getting all this stuff basically for free...maybe $1-2 oop.
I think I will start keeping a log of how much I get vs how much I spend.
And Lisa - I want to know how to get free/cheap beer...I think THAT would get his attention.
Thanks, everyone! |

I wish the poor would do a better job using coupons it woulld let them get more with their state dollars | Well not everyone who is poor is on welfare, but those that are need the skills. "Someone" has to teach them. It is nice to say "I wish" but...(see my signature!) who is that "someone"?
We got off of food stamps begining on 07 and are making really good progress. We were able to use the help for a time and get ourselves back on our feet. And are trying ever so slowly to build a nest egg so that if God forbid my DH is injured at work again we will be able to support ourselves better.
I think vision and goals (personal, family, and financial) are very important!
OP keep track of your savings and spending and once your DH starts to see how much more stuff you can get for the money or more money you can save or use towards other things I am sure he will "get it" more. Perhaps treating him to a night out and saying to him "I paid for this dinner with my coupon savings" will impress him.

So, someone posted on DAGG that she had like 20-30 winetags, no wine purchase necessary & they were for beer, up to $1.50, no size restrictions. They were about to expire, so she traded with me very easily & generously. So, I went over to Farm Fresh, where they sold the individual foreign beers anywhere from $.99-$2.00 a bottle & loaded up.
You should have seen Kurt's eyes when he came back in from unloading the van (I shop, he unloads-lol). He had this Homer Simpson glazed look & was like "You got beeer..." lol! Hook, line and sinker:-)
