Default Re: How did you get your husband (or wife) on board?

I just started combining sales with coupons again a few weeks ago. I used to really have fun with this before I had kids, but then when my twins were born, I just didn't have the energy to keep up with it. Anyhow, I just love this board and my dh thinks its great that I'm doing so much to save us money. Today he had to buy some printer paper so he ran out to Staples. He found the very best deal there and also brought home a Staples Reward Card that he had gotten for me. I don't remember him being quite so supportive when I used to do this. I think he loves the fact that even though I don't work outside the home anymore, I'm still trying to stretch our budget as far as possible.

We love going to Disney World and can only afford one trip a year. I'm hoping that I can save enough money to squeeze in 2 trips next year and my dh is cheering me on.

One of the first deals I did after finding HCW was for Kotex. I don't need them anymore but was buying them for my DIL. Hubby was with me and he bought a few things that were on sale and was giving me grief for buying the kotex. I made him pay for his stuff and then I did my deal. My OOP was much lower than his :sb2:(I think I paid around $1.50 for 6 packs) and he was shocked. LOL He will bring home coupons he finds now and when I come in with 26 packs of toilet paper he finds the room for them.

We live in a hurricane area and we would always stockpile a little right before hurricane season. Hubby said the other day he couldn't think of anything we need for this coming hurricane season except a couple of gas cans. hehe

He is totally on board but then again he usually supports me in any wild ride I want to take him on. After 28 years together he has learned to just hang on tight.

I just read through this whole thread and went in and hugged him tight and told him how much I appreciate him.

Before we got married, my husband had zero money saved. He spent everything he earned every month. He never even thought about coupons, and was short many times as well. When we got married, I took over the checking account, and brought in my use of coupons and sales hunting. We shopped together, (ha-which means me picking him up in the magazine aisle when I'm done) In those days, just last year, Albertsons still had the shopping card and the register would beep with savings from the card combined with the coupons. He'd see at the bottom of the receipt how much I was saving. Same thing happens at Smiths. He was eating better, feeling better, and we weren't running out of money before we ran out of month. Pretty much from the beginning, he's been a believer. He'll even take coupons I give him to use on items to pick up on his way home, so we save on gas. Just recently, I've started stockpiling. I gathered up everything I bought on sale and with coupons or got for free this last 4 weeks and he snapped the shot for me.

I used q's here and there up untill the last 2 months. Now i don't leave the house with out my bag. My Dh HATES shopping with me now, but we have a rule He only has to go 2x a week. Usually saturday and sunday. He still can't get over how much we have and how its litterally cost next to nothing. But as the PP said, when i go to krogers after i get everything i go pick him up in either the magazine isle or the starbucks cafe, He don't like it but he likes the savings! He don't like going to walmart with me more then anything. It takes atleast 20min to check out, my reciept it usually 8-10ft long... But thats ok I buy he unloads and puts away :0)

My husband will stop at Kroger after work for milk and $50 later he is home. I have since banned him from all unnecessary stops. At first he thought it was just a coupon phase, but now I think he secretly enjoys going out on Sunday mornings for my papers and coupons.

I came up with a challenge when we were trying to get out of debt

since debt free

Looking at the budget how could we each contribute to paring down and how low could we go?

he took lawn work, i gave up cleaning lady and took on the grocery bill challenge
every month when we saw the debt go down we were seeing tangible fruits of our labor.
now i take what i spend under $400

(what is left in the envelope) and we put it aside for a trip or splurge. last year i saved enough he went on afishing trip with his brother

i think he is secretly proud I am the crazy coupon lady...he now even asks if i have a coupon before he goes to get ANYTHING...even when it makes me laugh..he thinks there are coupons for everything and there almost is

Default Re: How did you get your husband (or wife) on board?

My dh got on board, after we didn't have any bar soap. When I stockpiled them (finally) he was so happy to not have to wait for me to go to the store. He loves it that he can just go to the closet, and get what he needs.
The other thing, is when he's eating, say, lunchmeat. He'll tell me, I like the taste of this, but it's not as good as Oscar Mayer. I'll say, it was FREE. He'll say, WOW, this is the best lunchmeat! He loves it when he's using/something that's free. It's awesome to see his face when he knows it's all free.

Sometimes he get's mad about the time consumption, I do spend alot of time on HCW and at the stores, but the end result, he loves looking in our closets and storage unit and seeing all the items we've gotten for free!

He still refuses to use coupons, *unless I map it out, and promise it will work*~like on coke or something. He always says, if it doesn't work, I'm not going to argue! He won't be my "2nd" and go and purchase a set of anything. I'm on my own. When he goes to the store (usually late at night, when I've ran out of Coke or we need milk) he goes to the corner store, and will pay full price. I hate it, because there is usually a sale at another store b2g1f or something, and he's paying nearly $6, when for another $4, we could have 3x as much!!
Oh well. I just try to make sure I don't run out of coke. This may mean buying 25 12pks at once, but that will last 2 weeks...

My DH gave me a hard time at first. He'd see me come home with 10 of something and roll his eyes. But now he brags about it! He'll bring me catalinas when he (gasp!) goes to the store for something and he tells everyone at work how I get 'all' of our groceries for free (we don't, but whatever. LOL).

BUT he doesn't understand it AT ALL! I swear, I can't stockpile any freezer food right now because corn on the cob was 10/$10 at Schnuck's so he bought 10. I can get fresh corn for half that price. So now we are eating corn for dinner EVERY night so I can free up some space. I just can't convince him that it's a marketing ploy and not a deal unless you have a coupon. I just can't keep him out of the darn grocery store. I've tried. LOL

My DH is very excited about the coupons. He pulls the blinkies for me at the stores too. He likes saving the money. He did look at me a bit funny when I pulled out the 3 inch binder full of coupons, and joked that this couponing might come between us, but he happily carried it into the store for me when we went shopping. I think when a DH doesn't "like" it, they must not understand it well..they need to see the raw numbers of what you spend now and what you would have spent..I would think that would convert anybody.
