| Re: How did you get your DH on board? Many of these posts just highlight for me exactly how lucky I am :D. Not only is hubby on board, HE is the more 'aggressive' couponer of the two of us. If I'm tired or frustrated, I will let things go--He has no problems with a line of people behind him and a cranky cashier politely informing her that the reason the $4/$20 (or $10/$50 or whatever) isn't working is because she rang up the manufacturer's Q's first, even though he handed her the $/$$ first, and that she's probably going to need to void the transaction and start over to make it work right. And that he will wait while she does it. He will argue with the cashier that 'any' size means 'any', including trial. And he will unashamedly return items that either rang up wrong or the cashier refused the coupons for, and politely explain to the CS people why he is returning it. He happily fought with the common sense challenged cashiers at our local K-mart for the duracell deal. And he will happily clip or pick up coupons for tampons that are on sale, and use them without blinking. He gets annoyed when there is a coupon 'out there' for a product he wants but he can't find the coupon.
We coupon by necessity, but we chose it--we both want me to be able to stay home with our three little boys, but that's tough to do on a teacher's salary. Couponing, breastfeeding (formula is EXPENSIVE!!) other cost cutting measures, and not having to pay for day care financially makes it feasible for me to stay home without having to really change our style of living. Hubby is the one who points out to me how much we are saving, in many cases how much higher quality items we are purchasing (name brands instead of generics), and how much closer we are to our financial goals at the end of each month. Now if only I could convince him to stop shopping at convenience stores for 'just a snack' . . . :D |

| Re: How did you get your DH on board? I need help with my husband. He usually does the bills, the bulk of food shopping and cooking. We recently moved into a new place, much nicer than where we were living but we'll need to be frugal where we can in order to afford increased rent and heating oil.
At any rate Stop and Shop is having a unilever deal..spend $15 on qualifying products get a coupon back for $5 oyno..well the cat machine has been spitting back 2 coupons per order.
The man stood there with me,watched the cashier total the bill, watched me give a $5 coupon and pay less than $5 in cash for the balance, watched the catalina machine spit out another $10...and still stood there complaining "what are we going to do with all this peanut butter?" Ï can buy generic when we need it"
I was soo mad!!! I asked him if he even watched the transaction !! they basically paid me to take the product out of the store!
We have a walk in pantry, huge closets, extra storage in the garage and basement.
What will it take to get him onboard? he says it's "embarrassing" I'm the sole breadwinner here,I say it's embarrassing to not stretch every penny out of our food dollars.I did not buy one single product that we don't use regularly.
Heck, we use olive oil daily for grilling and cooking,it's expensive so he usually buys small bottles of the generic and even then complains about it's cost.
today I got
20-lipton rice and sides
9- skippy peanut butter
4 -bertolli olive oils 25 ounce size--these usually go for $12.99 each
ICBINB-2 LARGE TUBS
Dove beauty soaps-2 packages
pork loin roast
soft cream cheese
silk soy milk
under $40 total in cash... I have $20 left over in coupons good off my next grocery order. He can't see the savings??? |

| Re: How did you get your DH on board? I was really troubled by my husband's reaction to the idea of couponing so I've decided to maybe write him a letter.
The deal is this,we moved out of a bad situation to a much better one but this upgrade has basically doubled our costs for rent and utilities. My husband is accustomed to a budget of $400 every 2 weeks..this budget is to cover, food.cleaning products and his personal spending. I pay the rent, lights, heating oil,gas for cooking, cable tv/internet.
We've moved, our expenses have increased but the one taking the hit and making personal sacrifices to make this happen is me...after I've paid all the bills there's nothing left for any personal spending at all for me. Now one of 5 things is going to have to happen here.
1. his household budget gets looked at and we cut back on food, his personal spending.
2. We cut out a lot of the cable services that he and DS love so much
3.I work more hours/take a second job-the last option IMHO
4. he gives up SAH husband status and gets a job.
5.We get smart,he takes a deep breath and trusts me on couponing/rebating and works with me to maximize our lifestyle on our existing income.
I would prefer that we choose option number 5 but we will need to be making hard choices and soon. Payday coming and going And me not having even enough left over to upkeep my hair every couple of months is total BS. |
