Default watching the register

How do y'all keep track of what everything costs? How do you know if something rings up incorrectly?

Just set a budget and pay close attention to the prices if you over your budget or over what you had on the calculator then something is off i always double check before walking out of the store.

I write a list of what I am buying and keep track of the prices, less the coupons. I always know exactly what I should be paying at the register. The only varilable is tax, which is easy to estimate. If something is off at the register, I will know. It helps to watch the screen if possible to note the individual prices showing up as the order is processed. You also have to keep close watch on the coupons to see if they are all put through properly. Somtimes they can stick together and such.

I keep a running tally of tally marks on my grocery list. I do the price AFTER Q, so all I have as an unknown is the tax and like nrpeace said, that's not enough to really throw my math off.

Also, when I have more than 2 or 3 of a Q, I count how many there are and I tell the cashier, "I have 10 of these and they are slick, so I just wanted to tell you". Many times they will just scan one of them that many times after they double check.

Thanks for the words of advice from everyone! Today at Target I missed a toothpaste that rang up correctly and I thought my total sounded high. Sure enough the toothpaste rang up at regular price. At least I caught it before I left the store. I think it is best if you have a lot of Qs, to get in a line that is a little longer so you have time to put everything on the belt and then you can watch the cashier while they ring everything up. Thanks again!

I too write down each item as I put it in my basket and write the price down as well as how many of the item I purchased. I deduct the coupon amount next to the original price for my end total of that item. Before heading to the register I total each column, original price, coupon totals and after coupon prices. I can easily check against my sheet as it rings up. I also don't mind being the pain that stands there (out of the way of course) to double check my receipt before leaving that register. I just park my cart across from the sacking area (or where ever room allows that I am not obtrusive.) If there is a mistake that I missed while scanning I can immediately go back to the same checker and have the correct action taken. Sometimes I have to see the managers station but most times I can take care of it at the register.

I used to find that one or two of my coupons would not get scanned until .... I figured out that if I stand there and physically count the coupons while the cashier is scanning, "Announce" how many coupons I have when handing them to the cashier, and then watch and count (in my head) each beep and -$1 that is on the screen. They know I'm watching and can tell I'm counting. They haven't missed a coupon since :)

I watch the cashier very closely. At my CVS I always get this grouchy lady that sighs and grumbles when I pull out my coupons. She tries to move as quickly as possible when scanning, so I have to keep an extra eye on her!

Depending on the store, you sometimes don't want to catch the cashier and have them change the price. Here in Huntsville, AL, the Publix and Krogers will give you the item for FREE if it overrang (not the correct price). Sometimes I've used a coupon with what I buy, but the item still didn't ring correctly. Coupon savings still count (overage for now another item), but the item is FREE.

Kmart HATES it when I count the coupon beeps out loud... it's only because I figured out that they didn't scan some of my coupons at the service desk and they are hesitant to shut down a lane to confiscate the coupons and double check the cashier. This way I know I have 12 coupons and I better hear 12 beeps.

Sounds like a cashier by me lol :)

I always try to keep a close eye on the register because I really don't want to have to go back in for a few dollars here or there...I would rather catch it and correct it at the register
