.25 cent seed packets, Walmart

For those who are new to gardening, or want to add to their seed collection, I noticed that Walmart has their .25 cent seeds out, which could be cheaper in your area, since a friend in VA said they were .15 cents a piece.

Last year I did a lot of testing on them, and they all grew and did just as well as the Burpee or other seeds. I have no clue if they are GMO or Heirloom. There were at least 20 different kinds:

Lettuce - 2 different kids
Cantaloupe
Zucchini
Yellow summer squash
Beans - 2 different kids (I think)
Spinach
Cherry Tom's (and one other)
Cukes
Sweet Corn
peppers - jalapenos

and a few others. There was also Herbs like Dill and basil and flower packets with sun flowers, daisies, and others I can't remember. FYI for those who want to try or replenish.

I've always done really well with the cheap seed packets. Depending on the store they can run anywhere from 10 cents up to 59 cents around here. Of course, it seems every year they get higher, but still a great deal compared to other brands.
The only problem I've had is with Chives. No matter what brand or what year, those packets never seem to do well. I get a few tiny plants or none at all. If I plant the more expensive seeds, I don't have a problem getting a healthy bunch of chives.
As far as heirlooms, some of the cheaper seeds are the more common, old heirloom varieties. Often they will tell you right on the label.

Seeds of Change has some fun stuff, but when it comes to variety and price I think I prefer Pinetree Gardens, Bountiful Gardens and Baker Creek. I could go wild with those catalogs -- if only I had the space to plant it all!

I do more dreaming than planting in our climate. So many things I'd love to plant if it weren't for short season, cold nights, heavy clay, high alkalinity, too many trees, gophers, red ants... Sometimes wonder why we bother!
Greens grow REALLY well though, so we've tried about every type imaginable. Most years we can even get squash.
Didn't get ANYTHING last year. Weatherman predicted the 40s in late May/June and it dropped into the teens. Lost our second set of tomatoes that night, bok choy bolted and we gave up! Think we had less than two months between hard freezes.

I posted this for those who would like to try to garden, and who can not afford to buy the seeds that certain companies want an arm and a leg for.

I also have seeds of change, territorial seeds, blue planet, ethical bounty, burpee organic and a few others. But I don't think it right to thumb my nose at people who can't afford them.

Everyone is either trying to save money for one reason or another. Gardening can also be a way to save money. And one of the many reasons why people also coupon.

Thanks for posting! I'll have to go check it out. Since this will be my first real attempt at a garden this year, I don't want to spend a ton of money on seeds only to feed the deer around here. LOL. I bought 2 Greenland Gardener raised beds at BJs Wholesale last year on clearance and our new to us house has a garden area also. So....we will see how it goes. Hmmm....corn.....It would be fun to try for 25 cents. LOL.

Well saving-n-va, I have a solution for you concerning deer, as I have the same problem with moose and this solution works.

1. Old CD's - put them on strings and hang them around your garden. They don't like the flashing in their eyes.
2. Irish Spring soap, original formula, bars only. Moose HATE the smell! I am sure that the deer will as well. I hang a 1/2 of a bar around my garden AND I also put a couple slivers in some water and spray around my garden. Since moose hate the smell, they won't go near your garden.

That's a good way of putting it about the catalags. All sorts of great things none of us can afford!

One warning about the corn, you need to set aside a pretty large plot for it. Need to have at least two rows, more is better. The corn cross-polinates and if you don't have enough plants, you won't get any corn.

I posted about this last year, but if you are short on space and interested in trying a wide variety Artistic Gardens www.artisticgardens.com sells small sample packs of all sorts of great seeds. There aren't many seeds to a pack, but it is a much cheaper way to try a wide variety. They used to be called Le Jardin du Gourmet.
Looks like they've gone up to 40 cents a pack this year. They used to be the price of a postage stamp and if they ran out of one they would send you a stamp instead of a refund.
