Gardening thoughts & plans for 2012

Does anyone have a solution that actually works for ground squirrels? I can deal with the bugs, gophers, birds and bunnies, but those darn squirrels get more of my plants than I do. They really like everything, and it drives me nuts to see a beautiful tomato on the ground with a bite missing or an eggplant with scratch marks. I just love putting seedlings in the ground at transplant time, just to come out in an hour and wonder where they went. They are out already, digging up the lawn again, breaking my pots that are on the plant stands, etc., so bottom line is I need help if anyone has an answer.

last house we had the chipmunks ...they ate the tomatoes completely off my deck plants....they breed like rabbits. the only way to get rid of them is to trap them and either "transplant" them to a new home or trap and kill. the first is easier. my neighbor told me he trapped 50 + in the spring at his house.

got my table moved in front of the big basement window. plan on building a mini greenhouse to help the plants retain the heat ...it is in the same room as the furnace but still want to help them along. i have the clear plastic.

just need to get started. i got my potting soil the other day.

I started going ahead and planting some stuff. Best friend tilled the garden, and I am putting in all the early spring stuff, it gets so hot so fast here. Putting in Broccoli, Cauliflower, celery, swiss chard, onions, carrots, kale, spinach, sugar snap peas, turnips, and radishes, already planted lettuces. Can't wait! Will pull all that up when it's done and plant the tomatos, eggplants, peppers, green beans, and MAYBE try squash, I have the worst luck with it and zuchinni, stupid bugs!

I went ahead and started my tomatos, bell peppers, jalepenos, and rellenos in the house last week. ALL of them have sprouted now! YAY! They are about 3 inches tall. We are tilling and putting bagged cow in this weekend. Then we will till again in a cpl weeks. I can't wait!!

i am doing my seeds tomorrow. i have these newspaper "cups" for seedlings. and i got foil pans with the plastic lids today at dollar general. I am going to use those as mini greenhouses.

tomorrow is the day. will have the tomatoes, green peppers, squash, zucc's, cucumbers..and the rest depends on my seeds

Wow, I'm behind! This is my first garden all my own. I used to help my dad when he had one though. I ordered my seeds a few days ago, should get here on Monday. Is there anything else, that should be started early? Oh, and when do you move them outside?

I'm getting the supplies to put together my raised beds today. I'm SO excited!

How did you make newspaper cups? Ones small enough to fit in the homemade greenhouses.

my dh's grandpa has this wooden dowel contraption that he makes them out. his girlfriend cuts the newspaper and then he sits and watches tv and makes them. he tapes the end to make them stick well.

he got it out of a gardening magazine...i am not for sure on the name....

I've got to fiqure this all out early because I want a big garden at the new house this year. Where do I buy seeds and all? I'm scared to start planting just yet because I hear that we are due for alot of snow at the end of Feb or the beginning of March. TIA!
