Honestly, when I plant I take bugs into account on the yield. 1 for me 1 for the bugs. I do have a healthy bat and lady bug population which holds down the bug population. I also have a family of Cardinals which have taken up housekeeping in my lime tree for the past three years which also helps. I do use the red pepper spray mommasmoody suggested for my roses. For my other edible plants I delete the garlic.
