Default Advice for first time gardeners

My kids made the small planter baskets at Home Depot yesterday. I'm going to go back this week and get dirt and seeds. My kids are 3 and 5 so I need to find a super easy plant or flower to grow. Any suggestions to make this a fun non-disappointing thing for them?

    TIA!

Zinnias are super easy to grow - not sure in baskets though. Maybe if you get one of the mini-varieties that stays short. They come in lots of colors.

Veggie or flower? Marigolds are easy. Radishes and lettuce are easy growers, too. Tomatoes can be sorta easy.

Bean seeds will almost never disappoint as far as sprouting. Now if you're expecting them to produce, not sure.

Same as posters above, I have had super luck with tomatoes, radishes, lettuce and beans seeds...and I am a huge herb gardener!

If you are doing flowers I also vote for marigolds. Did those last year with my 4 year old!

I think marigolds are the way to go! I did those one year in my late teens and it was super easy! I wish I could do more and I wish that I could really have a garden (dream of mine) but we are in an apartment right now and even with hubby's job we move too often. BUT I am hopeful that one day SOON we will have a house to call HOME and call it that for many many years!
