    Default Green City Thumb?

    Hi all!
I live in a small city lot, but really? I am a country girl at heart!
I am going to pull up my flower beds this year and put in veggies. I am interested in square foot style gardening and also container planting.
Does anyone have books/websites/resources to recommend ?
    Thanks!
    Blessings!!!!! genet

It's been too long since I read books but there are some very good ideas on this site about container gardening. I'm sorry I've forgotten who but someone even had the idea to grow potatoes in a trash can.

Good luck in your endeavors and hopefully you can find that thread with the other useful information.

Well, I am reading the New Square Foot Gardeing book by the guy who invented the concept. It's a fascinating read. Definitely give me lots of ideas on how to make things better...

There are all sorts of specialized containers now. I got these patio planters from LTD: http://www2.ltdcommodities.com/site/...jump&fm=search

I hope to try some tomatoes and peppers and maybe a potato plant in them.

There should be lots of local resources available, as urban gardening is all the rage right now. Check with your local county extension office, they'll have growing tips specific to your area as well as offer inexpensive master gardener classes to help you get better skilled in square foot gardening.
Depending on where you are, there is most likely a seed sharing co-op already going and holding monthly meetings. That's another good place for local tips as well as trading unwanted seeds - one of the things about small space gardening is you'll end up with lots of open packets of unused seeds since you plant only a couple at a time.
If your area has an arboretum, check with them about classes. Ours offers monthly classes on small space/square food gardening.
For books, look into ones from world war II times, when everyone was doing victory gardens. Those are going to be about maximising space and urban gardening. Plus, they'll deal with heirloom plants instead of some rare kind that you have to order online/from a catalog to find. Also, Amazon has a lot of free classic gardening books available via their kindle interface (works on PCs and Macs too).
Mother Earth News is a good mag for tips on things like successive gardening and vertical gardening, two ways to maximize small space. They should have those still up on their website if you don't get the magazine.

Best of luck with your gardening! It's effort, but so worth it!

    In peace,
