HELP Strawberries - Need Help Container Gardening

I have been given some more strawberry plants and want to put them in containers to grow. Does anyone have any tips of what to do (or not to do).

I gather I need good drainage and a container that's about 12" deep. How close do you put the plants and should I let the runners spread out in a container garden? I'm thinking about using several clay pots and a couple old wood barrels (cut in half).

    Thanks!!

    Hi!!

Love growing strawberry plants in containers. They are super easy IMO, I have mine in regular old pots like you would use for a hanging plant. I have also put mine on my deck and when the runners go they actually go down on the dirt bed below and grab a hold (didn't do this on purpose but it just happened) LOL

You could always just clip the runners and re plant in a new pot if you wanted.

I have seen too neighbors put them in the Topsy plant thing that a lot of people use for tomatoes.

Thank you....it sounds like these plants aren't too picky. I guess I'll save the big barrels for some squash (since I can't seem to grow these in the ground) and use some regular large pots for the strawberries.

    Thanks again!!

In my research of container gardening, good drainage is essential. What I plan to do is use potting MIX (not soil) and some Perilite (SP?). and fertilizer. I' looking forward to growing my first garden this summer. Going to start small, strawberries, a tomato plant or two, bush green beans and maybe a green pepper plant.
