Default Can you start seedlings in egg cartons?

I was wondering if you can start seeds in styrofoam egg cartons?
I have heard of using the cardboard type of egg cartons, but I dont have any of those.

Also can anyone that lives in Michigan tell me when is a good time to start seedlings and also plant in the ground?

    googled:

i've made a discovery that using styrofoam egg cartons to start seeds work better than the paper ones! (even tho you can't plant the plastic ones directly into the ground) the plastic ones hold a lot more moisture than the paper ones which helps with frequent watering. so i just thought i would give my opinion.

I do my seedlings that way. :) I put little holes in the bottom of each "cup," and place it in a try (an old cookie sheet). I put in the soil, put seeds on top and gently press, water, and keep moist. I keep it on my screen porch so they get every so little sunlight (and what they get is quite shaded from the screen). When they're a little more mature, we transplant to bigger pots (I only do potted gardening so far... I'm supposed to have a real one next year).
Just another nobody in the midst of all the somebodies.

My grandmother always uses egg cartons to start seedlings. She uses both paper and styrofoam and they have both worked.

I use the paper ones, if you have a Kroger chain store they sell the 2.5 dozen that also has a plastic cover that doubles as a mini greenhouse.

It depends what you want to grow. If you are planning for tomatoes or cucumbers you cant grow them in frost, they need sunlight or else they may become weak...
