Best plant/flower to plant during fall?

Hi...

I am not great at gardening, in fact most plants that DH bought died on me! :sad: But I am not giving up and I want to plant something this fall.

I don't have a garden, just a patio/balcony, so most probably I will plant something in a pot. What would you recommend that I should start with? Can be flowers, vegetables... anything....

Many vegetables are annuals (meaning you plant in March, April, may depending on your climate). Some are perennials, like asparagus, and will come back year after year. Best idea is to go hang out in a plant store and look at the pics of stuff you like. Read the labels to see if its climate friendly to your area. I love bulbs (daffoldils and tulips, specifically) so will be watching for sales on those. I planted 6 rose bushes early this summer, so those will come back and grow larger next year. Along with a hydrangea. I like perennial flowers as annuals are pretty but, really, a waste of time and money as they won't regrow next year.

Not sure where you live (as that would matter) but Mums are a good thing to plant in the fall

What are your winters like?

I am in Charlotte, NC. Winters here are pretty mild. Snow is a rare thing, we got snow 3 times last winter....

I would second the suggestion of mums. You can go to a big-box hardware store like Home Depot or Lowe's and get individual mum plants for under/around $1 right now. You can mix/match the colors and really get some pretty fall colors in your outdoor space.

Mums the word! Great fall color for pots on the patio. We are already getting freezing temps at night here in Wyoming so I have to bring mine in at night. (We got a dusting of snow the night before last) but Mums are really nice. Also now is the time to plant bulbs like daffodils, tulips, crocus etc and they will flower in the spring. They need to be planted now and have cool temps for a few months. Daffodils will grow in NC for sure. What you might want to try is layering in your pots. Put in some soil in your pots, plant your bulbs, layer with more soil and plant your mums ontop. Come spring your mums will be done and your bulbs will be sprouting.

You guys are awesome. I have just done repotting all my plants that were dying on me. This weekend, gonna go get myself some beautiful mums and tulips bulbs! Hehehe...... Oh, I planted some morning glory and wild flowers... wonder if they will grow..hmmm...

Tulips are on clearance right now at walmart...they are in bags.
