I do this too! I don't bother shredding them. I just dig a small hole near the plant and bury them.

Eggshells work well too--they aerate the soil and add minerals as they break down.

Eggshells are great too. Rinse them out, lay on a paper towel to dry, then crush them up and sprinkle around the bushes. They also like used tea bags.

I pour coffee ground over mine. They’re also good on acid-loving plants like azaleas and camellias. If you’re not a coffee drinker, coffee shops like Starbucks give bags of used coffee grounds away for free. Just ask for them.

just wanted to say thanks to everybody for the tips about the coffee
grinds,banana peels and eggshells,i have been using all of them and my
tomatoes are big and looks so healthy,i have several that i will be
picking in the next day or two,i even put coffee grinds around my
string beans that i planted last month in containers and i have beans
already,they are not ready to be picked but it sure will not be long,

From Jerry bakers book- take egg shells and soak them in water 24 hours and pour the water on the roses (calcium). I bury the crushed shells next to the plant. I also take epsom salts (a small bag) mulch (a bag) and add egg shells - I add this around the bottom of my tomatoe plants and they GROW very big indeed.

also add coffee grounds around plants (nitrogen).
