I'm in Pa. So, I don't know if it'd be the case but, Penn State has some sort of cooperative? thingy, anyway they have programs open to the community on gardening, healthy living etc. Anyway, (what I'm getting at) is, they do a couple of programs every spring on composting and if you sign up, you get a free composting bin. I'm hoping to do this myself. Might be worth it, to check out your State College and see if they offer such a thing.

I have never used a tumbler, except when we had to use a OJ container in college for an experiment (boy did my roomies love me, lol). We've always used chicken wire at my grandads farm. I know some people love the tumblers but the way I was taught to compost normally takes two heaps, so it would cost an arm and a leg to have two bins going.

i do the pile composting now and bin composting, but with this tumbler you can get compost in two weeks instead of two months.

I also found a thing on youtube on how to make one, so if I can find a 55 gallon plastic drum I can do that.

ok, so I caved in and bought this...it is to be shipped and delivered by Friday!

the way I see it is yes, it is a heck of a lot of money for a plastic drum with a handle, but it will be put to great use with the huge third garden I put in over the weekend and will pay itself off in no time with the free compost!

Erin~
Will you please let us know how you like it? I have considered doing this for my gardening but have never met anyone who had used one for a genuine opinion. Thanks.

I am also interested in your findings! I have nowhere to plant right now but will have a fairly large garden next summer and was considering this.

keep us posted on how it works out for you...I just removed finished compost from my bin that composted over the winter but would like to get compost faster than every 6 months or so.

the funny thing is this tumbler shipped to me on Tuesday of this week. It is still sitting unopened in the box by the front door. Been pre-occupied this week.

But something strikes me as odd about it. It came in a flat box, not a large box with a cylinder shaped thing I expected. I did open the box a little and it looks like you have to bend the metal or whatever it is to make the tumbler.

That will be my project for tomorrow, putting it together. I will let you all know how that goes!
