Do I need a credit card if they are free codes? do I need to pay tax or whatever? Does the machine take cash?

Yes you'll need a card even if they are free codes, most don't take cash.

I didn't know either until my sister told me how to use it lol All you do is click on "rent w/promo code" from the get-go, make your movie selection, and swipe your card. I noticed that if you use the same promo code, use a different credit card each time as apparently, the machine recognizes the card. :)

yes they sent out emails changing how they give out codes. now the codes will be only used one time. so you can't spread them around...bummer i know. you can sign up to have the specific code just for you sent to your cell via text. its on the website.

How do you get the codes emailed to you instead of text? I don't have text on my phone. I do have an account and get other emails from them. Or are they no longer emailing them? I do know someone that got one emailed to them yesterday.
