QUESTION Food Lion - What to do with all the cherries?

So since a bunch of us on here are getting tons of cherries, what are you doing with them? Receipes? Great insights?

...and, my question is what is the easiest way to pit them? My searches have said to cut them in half and pull out the pit. Anyone have a more productive way???

We use a chopstick to push the cherry pit out. Either end seems to work just as well. Do this over a bowl to collect the juice, so you can add to your recipe. Use the SureJell freezer jam recipe to make great cherry jam, or make pies. I have recipes if needed- or go to allrecipe.com

I am going to make Cherry Crisp tomorrow. I was cutting mine in half to pit them since I don't have a cherry pitter. It is easiest to cut them all in half, then pull the pits out all at the same time.

Recipe calls for sour cherries so I will probably cut back on the sugar-but don't omit it, it is needed to make the "gel" for the fruit.
Cherry Crisp
    • 4 cups pitted sour cherries
    • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
    • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
    • 1 cup brown sugar
    • 1/2 cup butter
    • 1/2 cup shortening
    • DIRECTIONS

    1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
    2. In a large bowl, combine cherries, 1 1/2 cups white sugar, and 4 tablespoons flour. Pour into 9x13 inch baking dish. In a medium bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups flour, oats, and brown sugar. Cut in butter and shortening until crumbly. Sprinkle over cherries.
    3. Bake in preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until topping is golden brown.

Sounds tasty...my sweetie makes an awesome "insert ANY fruit" crisp. My favorite is peach. Love me some peaches, and I always sing the Peaches song any time we get peaches.

Wow that song takes me back to the 6th grade LOL

My kids have been eating the cherries like candy. I am not handy in the kitchen so they are just being eaten as is.

we have been eating them- my dd loves to spit out the pits, but I think she's getting tired of them!

Great tip on the chopsticks...last time I pitted 2 lbs of cherries by cutting in half, I dug out the pits with a grapefruit spoon...and it took fooooorrrreeevvvveeeerrrrr
I was so tired of cherries at that point. Not to mention covered in juice. I actually considered buying a pitter.

I think they would do well just by freezing. Of course I've never had any last long enough that I had to do it, but I'm assuming they would freeze nicely.
We love eating frozen blueberries, grapes etc.
