Default How do I get my DS to drink from a sippy cup???

He will be 1 on Valentine's day and we have been giving him a sippy cup on and off for about 3 months now and he just screams when we give it to him. I have tried 3 different kinds. The Nubby, Avent and Gerber and he hates them all. I have taken out the inside thing so the milk or juice basically runs out but it doesn't matter to him. He will scream until he gets the bottle. I know I could let him scream it out but he is strong willed about this one and I just don't know what to do. Any thoughts?

Maybe he doesn't understand it. Just keep it available to him, keep water in it where he can get to it at all times, or maybe some juice, keep it on the coffee table or where ever he can reach.I wouldn't make it so it's the sippy cup or nothing. Don't force him, it will only make it harder. Before you know it, he'll be drinking from a straw!

If he is set on using a bottle, I say let him use it for a few more months. I know that all the books/peds. etc say take it away at a year but it's really an individual thing. This exact thing was on a Super Nanny episode and I am trying to remember what she taught. I think you need to (maybe when he is a little bit older) have a party where you give up the bottle and a "fairy" or someone special brings him a special big boy cup.
Also, give him a choice-say you can have juice in your sippy cup or you can have no juice which would you like? He will probably cry a lot in the beginning but if you are consistent, he will learn and before you know it, he will be drinking out of the sippy cup. And remember when he cries-it's not because he is in pain or suffering but he's upset mostly because he is not getting his way or what he wants.
I hope this helps :) Patience and consistency are key! Good luck!

I can't say from personal experience, because DD didn't take a bottle, but the kids (twins) I used to sit for wouldn't give up their bottles. The house rule became: you can have water and formula in your bottle, everything else is in a cup." It took something like 3 days of sticking to that for them to be happily chugging juice from a sippy. There were quite a number of tantrums during that week, but the pain was pretty short-lived and you knew the kids still had something to drink if they were thirsty.

DS wasn't all that into sippies until we tried the Nuby Straw sippies (I like the 12 oz ones better than the 8 oz with handles).

We tried really hard to babyproof our house, but somehow, a couple of them still got in.

One of my kids did the same thing when she was a baby. Someone suggested to me that I put her in her high chair a little while before meals with only a sippy cup full of juice. It worked- she was hungry then and if I made her wait a bit for her food with only the sippy cup she would drink the juce from it.

I agree- there's no hard and fast rule of taking it away at 1, like something magical happens at 12 months and 00 seconds. You certainly don't want DS to end up with an oral fixation from trauma over taking his bottle away...... yep, I know it's Freudian, but there is some truth to it. He'll get over it when he realizes how proud you are of him drinking from a "big boy" cup and will throw the bottle away himself. That's how I worked with DS. When he saw his little friends drinking from cups, he had no interest in the bottle anymore. My first step was that he ONLY got the bottle when he was getting ready for bed, no other time, and he was not allowed to take it to his room, only in his chair. All the "comfort" was gone at that point. You know your DS and his habits, so do what's right for y'all.

Default Re: How do I get my DS to drink from a sippy cup???

I'm going through this right now with 13 month old twins and it's sooooo hard. At 12 months I figured I only wanted to do one transition at once, and formula to milk would be hard enough--- formula to milk turned out to be easy, but bottle to sippy cup is HARD!

Right now at exactly 13 months I'm starting it one twin at a time and I started REALLY being strong about it yesterday after on and off offering sippy cups and having them refused a lot.

Reena gets a bottle in the morning and a bottle at night but all drinking during the day is from sippy cup. Yesterday, she refused to drink ANYTHING all day long and screamed her head off at night for her bottle. Today, she refused to drink anything for about half the day until just a little while ago when she downed about 13 ounces of milk from a sippy cup after pushing it away and screaming for a day and a half every time I offered. She just simply got thirsty enough. I was stubborn and wouldn't give in---- she's 13 months old.... a bottle is bad for the teeth at this age, it's TIME. Morning and night will come next. Once she's doing well with sippys all day long anytime she wants a drink (And for heaven's sake HOLDING IT HERSELF instead of expecting me to).... I'll start working on her (much fussier and harder to handle) twin brother.

If you're wondering why you don't see me much around here.... :)

this thread hits home for me, thanks.

Now how do you get them to hold their OWN sippy cups in their high chairs instead of wanting to be held and having you hold it for them? When I give them sippy cups in the high chairs they just throw it down and laugh.

You figure this ONE out and Ill be your best friend! Oh whats this mom a toy I should throw in the floor for you to pick up?

And I dont know maybe my child just isnt as advanced or something but most of the advice here while great for older kids just wouldnt apply to my 11 month old. He doesnt care for the sippy either. But he isnt old enough to understand some of these methods.
He will take it but its a struggle. Good luck OP I feel ya!
