Default Re: How do I get my DS to drink from a sippy cup???

DS #1 didn't wean off his bottle until about 15-16 mos. I would not worry or try to rush or pressure him. Once DS was old enough to understand and see what everyone else around him was doing (mommy and daddy) then he wanted a regular cup, and never wanted a sippy cup at all. I just had to supervise him more to make sure he wasn't spilling or drowning himself, lol.

Now DS #2 is only 11 mos, and he wants a juice box with a straw like his big brother. He doesn't want his sippy cup either. So I just alternate between juice box and water in a cup with a straw when he needs a drink.

I think it's all a matter or personal preference. Maybe your DS would be happier w/ cup and straw or just a grown up cup. Don't stress over it.

One thing is for sure...stick to your guns. You are the parent, and children know how to bend us!! The cup that worked well for me was one that had the straw that opened and closed in a little cover. (I don't remember the brand).

I agree with austingirl...

my daughter didn't want to use sippy cup, so i put good tasting juice in sippy cup, and always add it out for her to grab, and would only put water in the bottle, (now milk was alittle harder story) but after 2 to 3 days, the bottle didn't matter, cause she didn't want water, and liked the juice much better, then also of not having any milk for 2 days, she came around to drinking it in the sippy cup, and also i bought some cups with straws, and she likes those better than sippy cup, i introduced them at the same time, i didn't think she could suck from a straw, but she did!

Good Luck!

That's the Nuby Flip-top. The Pinenut's favorite. I threw out all of the sippies with valves. They frustrated the heck out of him.

We tried really hard to babyproof our house, but somehow, a couple of them still got in.

I agree with other about the Nuby flip top straw cups (2 pack at Target for 5.74). My 11 month old ds is breastfed and has never used a bottle. I wanted to introduce watered down juice at 7 months. He refused all types of sippy cups. He was interested in our glasses though so we started giving him sips from regular cups. He loved it but it was a little tough for us- and messy. I started putting straws in the cups thinking he wouldn't get it. He totally got it. He was using straws well at 9 months. That's when we started with the Nuby flip tops. They're great!

Good luck!

My DS is a little bit strange. He will only drink his milk out of a bottle, his juice out of a juice box and his water out of a sippy cup. I tried putting milk and juice on a sippy and he would throw up each time. He would throw up everything including whatever he had during his previous meals. He is 15 months old now and I do not know how to proceed. Any ideas?

Thanks for all the advice everyone. We are still pretty much a bottle drinker but i have the sippy cup available at all times with some juice in it. He is gradually taking it more often and is getting the idea of how to drink from it. I think part of his problem is he is lazy. I have used the playtex bottles with the disposable liners and he has learned how to get all the air out so he doesn't have to even lift the bottle up to get the milk out. He was a smart boy when he figured that out a few months ago and now he is just a lazy boy. =) I know there is no set time to switch over and it might come down to a few days of just crying it out if need be and I will definitely do that on a weekend when hubby is around to help with my sanity.

WE DID IT!!!!!

It was actually a bit easier once we got going with it. We have been on just the sippy cup for almost a week now. We started last week Monday and he had nothing but the sippy cup all day and had only 1 bottle right before bedtime. He was tired and so cranky that I figured he was allowed 1. That was the last bottle though. We got one of the Nuby brand sippy cups that basically looks like a bottle nipple for the top. It was the one that worked for the first few days or so to help him understand that he needed to tip up the cup to drink. Now we are using whatever sippy cup I give him. I will work on the flip top straw ones next. Thanks for all the advice and support. My pediatrician said he wanted the bottle gone by 15 months so I am happy this wasn't as hard to finish as it was getting started. =)

I also bought my son the Nuby sippy cups and 1 muchkin because all he was doing with the sippy cups with hard spouts was biting it!
