Re: What was the worst advice that you ever got as a mom (or dad)? Gotta love the gramma-strangers who feel it's their duty to approach you sternly out of nowhere and chide you for not putting a hat on him, or socks, or a blanket, when the weather is balmy.
One crotchety old lady passing by told me I shouldn't let my son chew on his stroller straps. No, "How do you do? Oh isn't he cute!" Just a sharp word and she was on her way. He was teething. He had other toys to chew on, but those seemed to suit him better. I'd like to see her keep them out of his mouth!
Another grampa shook his head at my girlfriend and I while we were out with our kids in strollers. Her little one is only a few months older than my own. "Shouldn't be taking those kids out till they are at least two!" He hollered. "Gonna get them kids sick!"
One overly protective mother told me never to let my son go to the bathroom by himself when we are away from home. Now, I see her point in some situations. But, to keep things in context: her son is nearly ten. She doesn't trust him to go by himself into the church bathroom in our very small, family oriented church. She said she's gonna be nervous about it till he's 18 and on his own. And I don't think she's exaggerating. Yikes! Get a grip! I don't think I will be adding escorting my pre-teen son in and out of the bathroom to my to do list in ten years. The poor kid doesn't need his mom hovering over him like that till he's growing his own whiskers. I'd rather just teach him to holler if something funny starts happening!
