Default Need help w/hot meal ideas for family with newborn...Please read post for details

I signed up to take a meal to a family in my church that just had a new baby. There's just one problem. I'm SICK! I don't want to take any germs to the new baby (and don't feel like cooking anyway) so I was thinking about just sending my (not sick) husband out to pick up something hot from the deli section of the grocery store--like a rotisserie chicken or something. Would this be a good idea or should I just call the family and tell them we can't bring food because I'm sick?

Any ideas of what to get that's inexpensive but enough for a meal? (I want to keep it under $15 if possible) Beyond the occasional rotisserie chicken I never buy hot food at the grocery store so I'm drawing a blank.

I have to applaud you for thinking about other people while you are sick. Sending your husband to get food is a good idea. He could be a carrier though, even if he isn't sick, since he's been around you while you're sick. It's still a better option than you cooking for them though. Could you call the church and let them know and see if they have any ideas? Someone else may be able to cook for them or provide a meal. If you wanted to call the family instead, I see nothing wrong with that either. I would much rather find my own option of eating than have the possibility of sickness in the house with a newborn.

I'm sure the family will appreciate your efforts no matter what you decide.

Anything is better than the call. That mom already feels overwhelmed (I remember these days so vividly).

A rotisserie chicken, a bag salad, and maybe a simple dessert (bakery sections vary but at my store you can buy a small piece of cake for $2.49 - (that's less than $15.00) is great.

Or stouffers lasagne in the frozen section?

or a can of tomoto soup, a loaf of bread and some cheese.

The idea is not necessarily to showcase your gourmet skills - the idea is to help this very hormonal new mom feel the love. Having someone show up with dinner (however simple) and ooh over her and the baby (which hubby can do) is what's important. If hubby is so inclined, he might ask if she needs him to do anything while he's there. We're not supposed to lift and all, so little things start to get on your nerves.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for your help both of you. My huband was already sick with this stuff two weeks ago so I think he's fine but I might just see if someone else at church and do it. We are supposed to call the family to arrange a drop off time so that is why I was thinking of calling them in advance and letting them know we can't show up that day. I'm signed up for thursday and this is monday. So I have plenty of time to make other arrangements. I see what you mean about overwhelming them however. I probably will call the list organizer instead if I decide not to send food.

Can you offer to trade with someone on the list? I felt like the 1 month mark was when I needed meals with my second one, so if you get someone to cover for you, then maybe you can just take a meal in a few weeks. She'll think the meal is even better then!!

Hmmm...That's a good idea. I think families from the church are only providing meals for the first two weeks. But I can try to get someone to cover my meal and then surprise them with a meal next month. I don't have kids so everyone's advice is really helpful!

I would find someone to cover for you. A meal in a few weeks would be awesome!

You could always order them some Domino's Pizza and have it delivered, they're 2 for $5.55. Plus they'll have leftovers for lunch the next day.

i go with a frozen lasagna or the deli chicken and side item.

    you could do pizza too.

or call and ask them. tell them it is your turn and you want to treat them to takeout then ask them if pizza is okay and what they want on it. you could even call and have it delivered .
