I had a diaper disposal. I don't know if if was the Genie or what. My daughter is 13 now so I can't remember if it had a filter on it or not. But it probably did.

Dirty diapers can smell very bad very fast. No way would I put them in the regular trash.

We did have an upstairs and a downstairs. I don't think I ever changed her upstairs. That is where the bedrooms were. I just changed her downstairs.

I use the grocery bags, tie them as closely to the diaper as possible and flip the bag around the diaper again so it's double wrapped. (for poop diapers) The others just go into a small trash can, we empty trash about every other day so it's no big deal. With my first I bought a diaper pail. Essentially just as trash can with a lid, and a smaller lid in the center. But it had a compartment on the top for an air freshener. I would buy the cheap stick-up ones and take the disks out of the plastic stick-up container, put them in the compartment. I also bought the 13gal. sented trash bags from walmart. Not sure on the price since this was almost 5 yrs ago, but they weren't more than $3 a roll back then and they lasted me a really long time! The trash can we had was about half the price of a diaper geenie, I think they can be bought at BRU now. I see them at resale shops pretty often also.

CRW's comment can sum up my experiene with my oldests trash can also.

Newborn, exclusively breastfed poos don't stink so it may be that you'll be avoiding this issue for the first six months. Then, one you start solid foods things change! At that point, you could put them in grocery bags tied slosed and then into the regular trash.

We use cloth diapers though and have a diaper sprayer attached to the toilet which means we don't throw anything away and don't ever have to deal with stink.

If you haven't already, perhaps give some thought to cloth. They are really cute now and much easier to use than they used to be. Plus- they are frugal and less wasteful!

We kept a wipes box on the changing table just for "used" ziploc bags. In other words, when we were done with them in the kitchen they went into the wipes box on the changing table instead of the trash. DH would bring home the ones from lunch at work, etc and put them in there.

Then we used the ziplocs for #2 diapers. We can't keep our trash can outside in our neighborhood and the grocery bags would leave the garage stinking by trash day so this was a great solution for us!
