My son was 3 before he would actually go in the potty. One day he just said "no I want to go on the potty" and that was that. He was day trained at that moment and night trained in a week.
So my son is a little young from what they say is the "average age" of boys being potty trained. He just turned 2 last week and I think he's ready.
The reason I think he's ready is he shows SO much interest in going. He lets me know when he has to go potty, he tells me if he did go potty and he knows where to go and what to do.
Now the problem....once i get his pants off, take his diaper off and set him on his potty he gets almost like a stage fright or he gets distracted by everything in the room. He plays with the toilet paper or looks out the window. We have tried just about everything to solve this problem, our bathroom was stripped of all decorations and anything that was not an absolute MUST and moved everything else out of reach or put it as much out of sight as possible.
So after he doesn't go on the potty I put his diaper back on and what do ya know within a minute or two he's gone potty in his diaper.
This all leads me to believe he's ready but there's just something holding him back.
This is my first baby and I never had a big family and I was the first of my friends to have a baby so I dont know what to do and really have no one to turn to for advice.![]()
Should we just wait a little longer or should we be trying harder? Whats the trick?
Any advice is more than appreciated![]()

It sounds like he's not ready yet. I would put him in diapers...wait a few months and try again.
Average boy is 3 1/2. Average girl is 2 1/2.
You can spend the next 9 months trying to potty train him or you can wait til he's truly ready and get it done in a weekend.

Well we aren't getting upset or even pushing him to use the potty but he just really seems like he wants to. We still have him in diapers we haven't even thought of taking him out of them yet.
My son wasn't potty trained until 2 and half!
Amen!
My DS was potty trained a few weeks before he turned 4. But when it happened, he went from diapers to going #1 and #2 in the toilet AND wiping himself in a single morning.
We had tried about a year before just after he turned 3 and he went through EVERY single pair of underwear, shorts and pants in his dresser in less than 2 hours, so I figured out he wasn't ready.

He is yet to young. I would just let him go and maybe set on the little potty a few times a day if HE WANTS to.

I don't know why I ever read these type posts, I guess I just like self torture. If you want to potty train him, you can do it now. There is no such thing as being "ready." We trained all 3 of ours at age 2 or slightly before, completely within 3 weeks or so (with a few minor accidents), you just have to be comitted to doing it.
He's not going to learn it if he's in a diaper and he's not going to do it unless he owns the process. I'll gladly share the resource we used (lots of John Rosemond) if you want to PM me, because I'm sure I'll be shouted down with all the people who want to tell you there are "ready" signs and who think it's completely acceptable to have a 3+ year old in diapers.
My Grandmother always insisted that my mother was potty trained by 9 months.... but my mother said, according to relatives, it was my grandmother who was potty trained! My mother wasnt really potty trained, my grma was just good at getting her to the potty before she went!
My youngest also always wanted to sit on the potty just like his big brothers, at 1-1/2, however he never went.
I didnt worry, he was eventually potty trained at 2-1/2, once he stopped peeing during his naps, he was ready to potty trained, and learned in just days.
